Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s 12th directorial. In a career spanning more than two decades, Nolan has rarely gotten it wrong. Almost all his films have been box office successes except for 2020’s Tenet. However, the circumstances around the film must be considered. Releasing a film in an ongoing worldwide pandemic is not a good idea. Although, one misstep doesn’t change anything. When Nolan’s latest venture – Oppenheimer, released in theatres under normal circumstances the box office frenzy was out of control. Despite being an R-rated biographical drama the film’s numbers are unbelievable. Just last week, Oppenheimer became the 2nd Highest Grossing R-Rated movie ever beating out Deadpool 2. It’s been more than a month that the film is playing in theatres but the box office milestones are ceaseless. As we enter September, Oppenheimer is making headlines again.
Oppenheimer Achieves Another Milestone At The Box Office!
According to Box Office Mojo, Oppenheimer has grossed $853 million at the worldwide box office, thanks to its recent China release. The film has collected $310.2 million domestically and $542.7 million from international markets. This figure means that Nolan’s latest venture has crossed the lifetime collection of Inception ($837 million). This makes Oppenheimer Nolan’s highest grossing film except for The Dark Knight movies. To become the Highest Grossing R-Rated movie ever, Oppenheimer will have to cross Joker’s (2019) $1.06 billion. Which for now looks impossible.
Despite having tough competition in markets like India, Oppenheimer has managed to collect a hefty sum. The Nolan blockbuster has crossed the ₹150 crore mark in India despite facing off box office juggernauts like Gadar 2, OMG 2, Jailer and Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Oppenheimer has also secured a place in the highest grossing films of 2023. While Barbie is completely out of reach but the Nolan flick has just surpassed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Check out the full list below:
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie – $1.36 billion
- Barbie – $1.38 billion
- Oppenheimer – $853 million
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – $845.5 million
- Fast X – $704.7 million
This summer has been crazy. Barbie and Oppenheimer released at a time when summer 2023 ticket sales were down 7% from the same time in 2022 after films like The Flash and Mission Impossible 7: Dead Reckoning Part One underperformed at the box office. Since the beginning of “Barbenheimer,” the summer gross drastically improved, with the tally now standing $4.028 billion, the most since the summer of 2019, which hit $4.34 billion thanks, in part, to The Lion King and Spider-Man: Far From Home, which each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark globally. Both the blockbusters have triggered a spike in ticket sales by 16.6% helping Hollywood to go back to pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 4 years
The story of Oppenheimer is adapted from Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer will be the first film to be shot in B/W and IMAX. The film is made on a hefty budget of $185 Million. The film basically has half of Hollywood in it including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Kenneth Branagh, Gary Oldman, Casey Affleck and Michael Angarano.
