Christopher Nolan’s World War II biopic Oppenheimer was released on July 21 alongside Barbie. The analysts predict the movie might reach as high as $900 million. But the wait for Oppenheimer to come to streaming is going to be a long one.
Why Oppenheimer May Begin Streaming Later Than Assumed?
Nolan made a sizeable push for the viewers to get the best experience of watching the biopic in theatres. It makes sense why the director wants his film to run longer on the big screen. Christopher Nolan reportedly chose Universal to release the film to lock a longer theatrical-exclusive window. According to Variety’s sources, Nolan asked for a window between 90 and 120 days for Oppenheimer.
Puck’s Matt Beloni stated Universal managed to secure the project after agreeing to Nolan’s request of a 120-day theatrical window, which will keep the film out of homes until almost Thanksgiving. It was primarily the reason why Nolan chose Universal over Warner Bros. Universal has also been extending the streaming waits for its other successful film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Interestingly, Universal has a deal with NBC’s streaming service Peacock for most of its new releases. The deal requires all the releases to come to Peacock within 120 days of its theatrical release. Oppenheimer should start streaming on Peacock on Saturday, November 18, just around American Thanksgiving, which takes place on November 23.
The film will receive its digital release around a similar date with its physical debut on DVD, 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray slightly after, based on earlier patterns of movies coming to physical media at least several weeks after the launch on digital platforms.
