Good news for Percy Jackson fans! After nearly a decade, another Percy Jackson adaptation is here. On Friday, Disney+ announced a premiere date for its Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, based on the bestselling novels of all time by Rick Riordan. The announcement date is not random; August 18 is Percy Jackson’s birthday. The Disney+ series will debut on December 20 with two episodes. Disney Plus also released a new teaser, Watch It Here.
About the Percy Jackson Disney Plus Series
Riordan was unhappy about the previous film adaptations and expressed his disapproval on Twitter calling them a “mess.” He later deleted it. Unlike the previous film adaptations, Riordan was intimately involved with the whole process of the series. James Bobin directed the first two episodes. Riordan co-wrote the episodes with Jon Steinberg. The series will follow the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief.
In June, Riordan told the Hollywood Reporter, “One thing that we all agreed on was that we should do everything we could to preserve what makes Percy Jackson, Percy Jackson. That’s a combination of modern-day setting, classical mythology, action, and humor.” He continued, “One of the ways that manifested was making sure that we found actors who were an age that was appropriate for the way Percy is at the beginning of the books so that viewers could watch Percy, Annabeth, and Grover grow up on the screen, the way that you read about them growing up from age 12 to 16 in five books. I’m certainly gratified that we did it that way because the young actors that we found are fantastic.”
Walker Scobell plays the titular role of a 12-year-old who learns he’s a demigod. She is the daughter of a mortal woman and a Greek god. Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries play Percy’s friends, Grover and Annabeth. Other members of the cast include Lin-Manuel Miranda, Megan Mullally, Toby Stephens, Jason Mantzoukas, Adam Copeland, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Lance Reddick, Dior Goodjohn, and more.
