Persuasion - Netflix Drops Trailer With Dakota Johnson In Lead

Jane Austen’s novels are among the most widely adapted works of fiction ever written. Her writings have been continually revamped and reinvented to cater to modern audiences, giving us Colin Firth as the iconic Mr. Darcy and Clueless, one of the most memorable chick flicks of all time. Moreover, the 2020 film Emma had been nominated for two Academy Awards, among others. This summer, Netflix will be taking on Persuasion, which is Austen’s last completed work and certainly her most romantic. First published in 1817, it has since been adapted multiple times, including four different made-for-television movies and two television miniseries. Shot in Bath, Netflix’s version is the novel’s first feature film treatment.

Netflix’s Persuasion: Trailer, Cast And Release Date

Netflix released the trailer for the upcoming film on June 14. Check it out below.

Dakota Johnson (best known for the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy) leads this Persuasion adaptation as Anne Elliot, who, according to Netflix’s synopsis, is “an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy.” The storyline focuses on Anne’s life when Frederick Wentworth — the handsome man she let go — storms back into her world. This increases Anne’s dilemma, who now has to choose between leaving the past behind or following her heart toward second chances.

Johnson stars opposite Cosmo Jarvis, who is playing Frederick Wentworth. The period drama also features Henry Golding as Mr. Elliot, Richard E. Grant as Sir Walter Elliot, Nikki Amuka-Bird as Lady Russell, and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Mary Musgrove, alongside Suki Waterhouse, Ben Bailey, Izuka Hoyle, Nia Towle, Edward Bluemel, Lydia Rose Bewley, and Yolanda Kettle.

Carrie Cracknell has directed Persuasion, based on a screenplay by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow. First announced in April 2021, the movie releases on Netflix on July 15, 2022, making it the perfect summer viewing.
