Priscilla, directed by Sofia Coppola, is going to have its premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival soon, on the 4th of September. In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, Priscilla Presley herself, and Sofia Coppola sat down to share their impressions of each other and how they feel about the film. The movie stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis, and will be distributed by A24 in the United States. Priscilla serves as one of the producers of the movie herself.
Priscilla Presley and Sofia Coppola – What Do They Feel About Each Other?
Priscilla follows the life of Priscilla Presley, and her life with Elvis — told from the former’s point of view. With films such as Marie Antoinette, The Beguiled and The Virgin Suicides on her record, Coppola is perhaps perfectly suited to pivot the story around the woman whose life has been so deeply intertwined with one of the biggest names in music ever since she was just a 14 year old child. The movie will focus on the fact that Elvis had dated and married a 14 year old, something that is absolutely unacceptable according to today’s standards, the patriarchal standards of her childhood, and the arcs of him getting mad at her and leaving her injured with a black eye. Yet, Priscilla’s take on her marriage with Elvis has mostly been more tender than you would think. Presley told The Hollywood Reporter, ““I lived in his world. I wanted to please him. I wanted to fit in. I wanted to have fun with him. I wanted to see what it was that he liked.”
Priscilla has stated that she felt that it was safe to entrust her story with someone like Sofia Coppola who is known for her sensitive filmmaking centering women. Priscilla said about Coppola, “I just got who she was and I felt that she could get me. I thought, we have different stories, but she could understand this better than any writer because she kind of lived it in her own way.” Coppola, on the other hand, felt that the story of Priscilla going to Graceland, living out her teenage years quite different from her contemporaries, was very relatable. “But then I was struck by how much I connected with it emotionally. I thought it was just going to be a fun adventure, and I was surprised by how relatable her story was,” said Coppola of the time she had picked up the other’s memoir to read it.
Priscilla will be releasing in theaters on 27th October, 2023.
