Renfield is an upcoming Fantasy horror-Comedy film that is a part of the Dark Universe. The film stars Nicholas Cage as Count Dracula, Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, Ben Schwartz, Awkwafina and Brandon Scott. The film’s premise surrounds around, “Count Dracula’s lackey Renfield finds a new lease on life in modern day New Orleans when he falls in love with Rebecca Quincy, a feisty but perennially aggressive traffic cop.” As mentioned above it is a modern day adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1987 novel-Dracula, which had the character of Renfield. Renfield is to be Dracula’s deranged, fanatically devoted servant. In the entire novel he resides in an asylum where he is treated by Dr. John Seward.
He helps Dracula in his plan to turn Mina Harker into a vampire in return for a continuous supply of insects to consume and the promise of immortality. The film was original supposed to be directed by Dexter Fletcher but due to some issues Chris McKay took over. The film’s screenplay is penned down by Ryan Ridley. Hoult becomes the sixth actor to portray Renfield on-screen and joins the elite list of actors such as as Alexander Granach, Dwight Frye, Klaus Kinski, Tom Waits and Peter MacNicol. The upcoming adaptation is generating quite a bit of hype and amidst that the first trailer of the film is revealed by Universal Pictures.
Renfield: Nicholas Cage Makes For an Awesome Dracula!
The trailer is nothing but a visual representation of the film’s premise. We see the titular character from the first frame of the trailer where he is entering what looks like a therapy group, this might be turnaround from the original novel where there was a proper psychiatrist and asylum. We see how the entire film is set in the modern world and Renfield is well a lackey of Dracula’s who brings him various people to eat. However, as evidenced by the voiceover, Renfield is tired to this life despite it giving him superpowers.
He now wants a normal life, where we see Awkwafina’s Rebecca Quincy- Renfield’s love interest. We see how eating bugs gives Renfield amazing powers. Despite having dark themes and concepts, the entire film is treat in a light hearted and cheery manner. What transpires next is what we’re here to see how, Rebecca might help Renfield to get free from Dracula. The end of the trailer has to be its highlight as we get out first look at Nicholas Cage’s Dracula and wow, what a perfect casting! They’ve really not toned down or gone subtle on the look.
Be it the teeth, the extravagant jewellery, sharp long nails, the furry coat, everything just goes so well with the vibe of the film. The infamous villain introduces himself as, “Some call me the dark one. Others, the Lord of Death. To most, I am Dracula.” The trailer looks epic and reveals enough information to get us excited for the film. I am looking forward to this one.
Just like Marvel and DC Universal Studios wanted to replicate the idea of a shared universe called the Dark Universe, however after the disastrous critical and commercial failure of The Mummy (2017), which included Dracula storylines, the idea was scraped. Now, Universal has gone back to tell individual stories and Renfield happens to be the first one.
Renfield is slated to release in theatres near you on 14th April 2023.
