Robert De Niro’s upcoming mob film Wise Guys has a new title and release date. Wise Guys‘ original concept has been discussed and passed around since the 1970s. Finally, in 2022 this book-to-screen adaptation saw the green light in Hollywood. The official plot synopsis of Wise Guys reads as follows: Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, a pair of Italian Americans who run two separate crime families in the mid-20th century. Genovese attempted to assassinate Costello in 1957, although Costello retired from the mob.
New Title And Release Date of Wise Guys
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Barry Levinson Wise Guys will be delayed several months from its original release date of February 2, 2024. Warner Bros. has now changed the title of the film to Alto Knights.
The film is based on Nicholas Pileggi’s 1985 non-fiction book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family. The new title is derived from the Alto Knights Social Club, a club in New York’s Little Italy that was a hangout place for the Mafia. Alto Knights will revolve around the rivalry between NY mob bosses Frank Costello and Vito Genovese in the 1940s-50s. Genovese orders a hit on Costello. Costello survives but gets wounded in the attempt and eventually decides to leave the Mafia world. In an odd casting, De Niro will play dual roles of both the mobsters. Debra Messing (Will and Grace) as Bobbie Costello and Kathrine Narducci (The Irishman) as Anna Genovese, will play the role of Costello and Genovese’s respective wives. Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth) is also in the film in an unnamed role.
Alto Knights will be released in theaters on November 15, 2024.
