The box office success of Spider-Man 3, was adequate for Sony Pictures to greenlight a fourth film in 2008. The project went as far as to bring back the core cast – John Malkovich as the Vulture, Anny Hathaway as Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat, and Dylan Baker as Dr. Curt Connors. Director Sam Raimi also planned to bring back Bruce Campbell as the illusionist villain Mysterio. Sony was so committed to developing Spider-Man 4 that it commissioned a video game tie-in from Radical Entertainment. Ultimately, after concluding he would not be able to meet the May 2011 release date, Raimi left the project. Thus, we got Andrew Garfield in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
Spider-Man 4: Is Toby Maguire Coming Back?
Though every film in the trilogy was a massive success, Spider-Man: No Way Home was the most successful. With the hype for Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s returns, one can wonder if they will return in potential Spider-Man projects. However, how exactly would Maguire return? Will he be back for Spider-Man 4, Avengers: Secret Wars, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse or a film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?
During Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘s press tour, director Sam Raimi was frequently asked about Spider-Man 4, he said, “I didn’t think it was possible but after jumping back in with the Multiverse, I realized that anything is possible now so I’m completely open to it.”
In an interview with Fandago, Raimi opened up about the idea, “I’ve come to realize after making ‘Doctor Strange’ that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, and team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful.”
It seems unlikely Sony will create Spider-Man 4 at the moment as Holland is set to get his fourth film in the next few years. However, he could appear in Beyond the Spider-Verse, especially after it was rumored he might appear in the animated franchise following several live-action characters featuring in Across the Spider-Verse.
Tobey Maguire vs. Kang in Avengers: Secret Wars?
Both Garfield and Maguire confirmed in No Way Home that there are no Avengers in their world. However, as the Multiverse comes together against Kang in The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, they might come together.
According to rumors, Marvel is “aiming to get as many heavy hitters as they can” for Secret Wars. Maguire was particularly named in that rumor, considering No Way Home it only makes sense. When Maguire was asked if he would stick around as Spider-Man, he said,“I love these films and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’, it would be a ‘yes!’ Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”
So far, we know the actors are willing to return and MCU is eyeing a massive crossover of old and new. Both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are now seeking a director, and it might well be Sam Raimi.
