Spider-man No Way Home Had More Plans For Daredevil

Spider-Man: No Way Home is the biggest box office hit of the past 2 years and has been described as one of the best theatre experiences in years by a lot of viewers. It’s been over a month since its release so, by now most of you know about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Their versions of Spider-man made an extended appearance in the film before being sent back to their respective universes. But apart from them, another fan-favorite character made as short appearance, which was Matt Murdock.

Writers Had More In Mind For Daredevil

Marvel Netflix’ Daredevil is often considered on the best live action superhero series ever. Owing to its gritty and realistic tone, it garnered tremendous love from the fans and fans were rooting to see him return. As you may know, the show was abruptly cancelled after an incredible 3rd season because of the coming of Disney Plus. Many fans rejoiced when they saw Matt Murdock portrayed by Charlie Cox return in No Way Home.

But it was just a little cameo and he appeared only as a lawyer, leaving fans rooting for more. As it turns out he had a better role planned for him by the writers but there was only so much they could include in an already packed film. In an interview with comicbook.com No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers expressed their vision.

“That was the challenge with this movie bringing all these other characters in … Once we knew we were gonna have Matt Murdock, it’s like, ‘He could do this, he could do that, that would be so cool, wouldn’t that be great?’ But ultimately, we always had to pull back on a lot of things to just make sure we maintained our focus,” McKenna said.

My Problem With No Way Home’s Daredevil

While many fans enjoyed it, according to some, the one thing that the film did not get right was Daredevil. Those of you who have seen Netflix’ Daredevil might relate to what I am talking about here. Daredevil was known for its dark and gritty tone which did not quite reflect in the mainstream MCU.

The serious and grounded tone of the show is what made Daredevil amazing, and fans were always skeptical about the character rights to going to Disney. Ever since Daredevil was cancelled #RenewDaredevil has been trending, but this is not how we expected to see him. In a brief cameo, this PG13 version of the same Daredevil we adored cracked MCU like jokes and caught a flying brick.

The problem here is that this is not the Daredevil we know, despite being portrayed by the same actor. Daredevil went lengths to conceal his identity and here, he just catches flying bricks as blind Matt Murdock in front of strangers. Could you really blame the fans for not liking this? Over the last decade Disney has made incredible movies but messed up many characters including most of the Guardians of the Galaxy. That’s exactly what happened to Daredevil and to be honest, I was happy he did not have more role to play in the movie.

Taking inspiration form my beloved show, “I’d rather let the character die as the gritty and R rated Devil, than let him live as PG13 joke cracking Matt Murdock”.
