Filmmaker Taika Waititi is currently set to write and direct an upcoming Star Wars movie, the details of which have not yet been announced. He recently recounted how he forgot Natalie Portman had already been in the Star Wars prequel trilogy when he asked the actor about joining the cast of his Lucasfilm project. Portman played a significant role in all three prequel films as Queen, and later Senator, Padmé Amidala of Naboo.

It happened after Portman decided to rejoin the MCU for Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi told Rolling Stone. He stated, “Natalie said to me, ‘What do you do next?’ And I said, ‘I’m trying to work on a Star Wars thing. Have you ever wanted to be in a Star Wars movie?’ She said, ‘I’ve been in Star Wars movies.’ I forgot about those ones. [Laughs]”
In the same interview, the director informed that he is taking his time with his project, saying, “I don’t want to rush. It’s something I wouldn’t want to just leap into and not feel that it’s unique, it’s my film, and it makes sense. Because that would be a disaster.”
According to reports, the upcoming Taika Waititi movie’s script is still in the early stages of development.
Rumours suggest that the currently untitled Star Wars film will follow Waititi’s unique style, which is exciting for fans of his earlier films What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Even the expected release date of the movie – sometime in 2023 – isn’t guaranteed. “Yeah. Well, not 2023, but late 2023,” said Lucasfilm boss, Kathleen Kennedy. “We haven’t locked anything in.”
