Stranger Things 4: Why is the Upside Down Stuck in 1983?

As stranger Things is ending with season 5, which is probably two years away from premiere at this point and while the success of season 4 has created viewing hours records for the streamer Netflix, the Duffer brothers are rejoicing and happy with the reception. Recently they revealed in the Happy Sad Confused podcast a few details about the spin-off plans. None of the Original Characters Returning

The Duffer brothers have confirmed that none of the main characters from the Stranger Things show will appear in the spin-off, which reportedly differs a lot in tone with the original show and the brothers are planning to hand the spin-off to a new showrunner and take a break from the Stranger Things Universe to pursue other projects.

“Hopefully we find that right person to pass the baton to while we go on to do new stuff.” the Duffer Brothers said, adding they’re “really jazzed” about this idea, which they describe as “1000% different” from “Stranger Things.”

“It’s not following – I’ve read these rumors that there’s gonna be an Eleven spinoff, that there’s gonna be a Steve and Dustin spinoff, or that it’s another number,” they added. “That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that. We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all of that. So it’s very different.”

Spin-off connections to Stranger Things

Stranger Things 4 Who is the Main Villain- Vecna or The Mind Flayer?

The Brothers confirmed that despite of the dissimilar tone of the spin-off, it ultimately connects to the world of the Stranger Things.

“The most important connective tissue I would say is the storytelling sensibility of it. There is story that connects to the ‘Stranger Things’ world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

It’s really too early to say what the direction the new spin-off heads under the guidance of the Duffer brothers, but it’s clear that we aren’t going to see Upside Down/Hawkins for a while, which is very much tied to the original show and the spin-off seems to follow a different tone than the original.
