DC Universe is in big trouble right now as after delivering 6 back to back box office bombs, Blue Beetle is all set to be the 7th one with just $125M Worldwide Gross so far. Although WB already made a bold move by entirely discontinuing the DCEU and handing its reign to James Gunn and Peter Safran last year, bad time isn’t over for the studio yet. In fact after Blue Beetle, Aquaman 2 is also projected to be a huge box office bomb after poor test screening results. So, only with the release of James Gunn’s DCU’s first film Superman: Legacy, can we expect things to start falling in place for DC. But that is still quite far away, and here is all you need to know about the upcoming film which will not just reboot Superman. but also the DC Universe as we know it.
Production Updates and Release Date
Superman: Legacy was confirmed in December 2022 and its title was officially revealed by James Gunn in January 2023. Later in March 2023, Gunn confirmed that he will be directing the film and in April 2023, he announced that pre-production of the film has officially begun. After that, we heard a lot of casting and character updates for the film as well confirming characters like Lex Luthor, Krypto the Superdog, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, Mister Terrific, Jimmy Olsen, and Green Lantern.
In June 2023, it was officially reported that David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were cast in the lead roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. As for the release date, it slated to release on July 11, 2025 and Gunn announced that filming would begin January 2024. However, due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, they hate taken some hits. Even though the writer’s strike have now ended, the SAG-AFTRA strikes still continue and if they do not wrap up soon, the filming might get delayed. If the filming gets delayed, it would also lead to release day as superhero films require a lot of post-production work and reshoots.
Good thing is that the first draft of the script was made well before the WGA strikes began, and now that they have ended, the script can easily finalized on time. The most hopeful scenario would be if the strikes end within a month, so that the filming can begin in January itself. Post that, every new month the strikes continue, the filming will keep getting pushed back on a relative scale. So, if the strikes end by December, the filming for Superman: Legacy would not be able to take place before March 2024. The sooner the strikes end, the sooner will the filming take place; and the sooner the filming takes place, the less likely would be any delays.
Superman: Legacy Cast and Plot Details
Since, the film is in early stages of the production, not much is known about the plot of the film. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Aside from this as mentioned above, the film will introduce us to many DC characters including Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, Krypto, and Mister Terrific.
