The Last Voyage of the Dementor All We Know About This R-Rated Dracula Movie

Dracula has been sleeping for sometime but 2023 is shaping up to be the year of Dracula as we’re getting not one but two American films about him. The first one, aka, Renfield released last week and proved to be a goofy but fun take on the iconic character. The second one we’ll be getting this year is called “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” directed by André Øvredal. Nosferatu Unlike Renfield though, this will be a serious take on the character and will hence, land directly under the  supernatural horror genre. This article will detail you about everything related to this upcoming vampire movie, so read on!

The Last Voyage of the Demeter Release Date and Trailer

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is all set to be released in the US on August 11, 2023, by Universal Pictures. As it happens a trailer for the film was also released last week and boasted an intriguing narrative, excellent VFX, and a fearsome Dracula. Here, check it out yourself in the link above!

TLVOTD Cast and Crew

The film’s main cast includes Corey Hawkins as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter; Aisling Franciosi as Anna, an unwitting stowaway; Liam Cunningham as the captain of the Demeter; David Dastmalchian as Wojchek, the Demeters first mate; and of course Javier Botet as Dracula! The Last Voyage of the Dementor also stars Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapičić, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Woody Norman, Martin Furulund, Chris Walley, and Nicolo Pasetti as Deputy Hirsch. The film has been directed by André Øvredal with cinematography by Roman Osin and score by Thomas Newman. It has been produced by DreamWorks Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, New Republic Pictures, Phoenix Pictures, and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter Plot – What Is It About?

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is an adaptation of “The Captain’s Log”, aka chapter 7 from the 1897’s Bram Stoker novel Dracula. The film will be about the events that took shape of the ship called Dementor on which Dracula first arrived to England in order to find Mina. The official plot synopsis of the film reads, “Strange events befall the crew of the merchant ship known as the Demeter as they are stalked by a dark presence: the vampire known as Dracula.”  Although it was a minor event in the novel, it has enough content and thrill element to make up for a good feature length film.

Is It Going to Be R-Rated?

Yes, The Last Voyage of the Demeter has officially been confirmed to be rated “R” by the MPAA. It will consist of “bloody violence”, “gothic vampire tropes”, jump scares, and moderate profanity making it unsuitable for children.

Is The Last Voyage of the Demeter Related to Renfield?

If you have seen Renfield, you might be questioning if The Last Voyage of the Demeter fall in the same universe as Renfield. Well, even though there are both distributed by Universal Pictures, Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter are in no way related to each other. The tone of the two films are different and the timelines of the two films also do not make any sense. So, the Last Voyage of the Demeter isn’t a dark universe or Renfield spin-off but a standalone movie in its own.

Who Plays Dracula in The Last Voyage of the Demeter?

As mentioned above, it is Javier Botet who will be playing the character of Dracula in The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Javier Botet is usually cast in creature roles such as The Crooked Man from Conjuring 2, Enola / Margaret / Pamela from Crimson Peak, Hobo from IT, Key Face from Insidious: The Last Key and more. He has also portrayed Tristana Medeiros in the REC franchise (2007–2012), the title character in Mama (2013), Set in The Mummy (2017), and Slender Man in the 2018 film of the same name. So, from the trailer, it seems like in this film we won’t be seeing his face but him as a prosthetics heavy Dracula.
