The Witcher 4 - Over 250 Devs Working on the Game At CDPR

While Netflix is currently struggling with The Witcher IP, the one thing Witcher that did not disappoint in the recent past was The Witcher 3 Next Gen update which one again dragged fans back into the world of Witcher. Also, as you may know, CD Projekt Red announced quite a few exciting Witcher game updates last year including The Witcher (2007) remake, Project Polaris, and Project Sirius. As it happens, today we have an amazing update regarding the next game in the Witcher series which we’ll refer to as The Witcher 4 in this article.

CDPR Reveals Plans for Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty and The Witcher 4

With its latest patch, CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077 has finally become the game we all wanted in the first place. Now that the work on Cyberpunk’s Phantom Liberty DLC is finally about to wrap up, the devs will now be able to shift their prime focus on The Witcher. As you may know, there are 3 major CDPR Witcher related projects which have already been announced. One of these 3 projects is the Project Polaris which is basically the codename for the next instalment in the series which would launch a new trilogy.

At an earnings call, the CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński shared a major update about Project Polaris and revealed how large the game’s dev team is. “The Polaris team has grown to almost 260 developers at the end of July. After releasing Phantom Liberty, we will transfer a big part of the team to Polaris.” he said in the earnings call. With 260 devs already working on it, Adam went on to say that, “We’ll transfer a big part of the (Phantom Liberty) team to [The Witcher 4]. Some members will be moved onto Cyberpunk Orion or Hadar, but we will also be supporting Phantom Liberty after launch.”

As of now 300 devs are working on Phantom Liberty DLC for Cyberpunk and even if half of them are transferred to Project Polaris, its total dev team would end up being 400+. This is a huge number and makes us believe that the work on The Witcher 4 is in full swing already. Witcher 4 will use Unreal Engine 5 instead of REDengine, which the two previous games used. The game is to be the beginning of a new saga and CDPR aims to release two more games after Polaris, creating a new AAA RPG trilogy. CD Projekt Red has promised that the trilogy would all be released within six years of the first release.

As for the other two confirmed Witcher projects, they are The Witcher Remake which will probably come out by 2025  and Project Sirius which is a codename for a game developed by The Molasses Flood and created with support from CDPR. It is said to differ from past productions, offering multiplayer gameplay on top of a single-player experience including a campaign with quests and a story. However it seems like the Netflix failures have led the devs to reconsider and completely rebuild the concept from scratch. CD Projekt said in a note to its investors that this decision was due to it re-evaluating “the scope and commercial potential of the original concept of Project Sirius, and ongoing work on formulating a new framework for this project”
