The Woman King once again proves that Viola Davis is a remarkable actor. In her most recent role, Davis takes on yet another character in the epic historical action movie from TriStar Pictures, showcasing her incredible range of talent. The Academy Award winner appears to be more than prepared for battle in the trailer released by Sony for the upcoming film, which is scheduled to premiere in mid-September.
The film chronicles the brutal training of the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit that guarded the Dahomey Kingdom in Africa. The movie will focus on their struggle to protect the African territory from white invaders who seek to ruin their way of life and ultimately uproot them. However, the warriors are unwilling to give up and will go to any lengths to defend their loved ones and homeland.
The Woman King – Viola Davis Stars In A Role Unlike Her Previous
The trailer also highlights the project’s production values, reflecting the narrative’s epic scale, from costume design to massive set pieces. Davis revealed to Vanity Fair in an exclusive interview that she trained four hours a day, five days a week, to physically prepare for the role. “Weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and weaponry training for the machete,” she said. “I like to say that I was the OG warrior.”
With intense fight scenes and complex action sequences, The Woman King is unlike anything Davis has done previously in her illustrious career. “I’ve never had a role like this before,” she told V.F. “It’s transformative.” Check out the trailer above.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Woman King tells the story of Nanisca (Davis), the ruthless general who led a female military group in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most influential states on the African continent during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Based on actual events, the movie follows Nanisca and her military recruit Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) as they tackle enemies and those who have harmed their sense of honour. Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Sheila Atim, Adrienne Warren, Jayme Lawson, and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin are some other actors who appear in the movie.
The Woman King will release in theatres on September 16.
