One of television’s most iconic sci-fi series is officially returning. The legendary paranormal drama The X-Files is getting a brand new reboot, and this time the project is led by acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler. The reboot is currently in development for Hulu, with Coogler writing and directing the pilot episode. The show has already received a pilot order, meaning production is preparing to move forward with its first episode.
The original series became a global phenomenon in the 1990s, blending eerie paranormal mysteries with government conspiracy stories. Now the reboot aims to introduce that strange world to a whole new generation of viewers. And yes, the aliens may once again be watching.
A Fresh Story With New FBI Agents
The reboot will follow a completely new story and a new pair of FBI agents. According to early plot details, the series centers on two decorated FBI agents with very different personalities who are assigned to a long-abandoned division that investigates unexplained phenomena.
Think mysterious disappearances, alien encounters, strange creatures, and government secrets hiding in dusty files. Basically, the kind of cases that make normal agents say “nope”. This setup echoes the structure of the original show, which combined standalone paranormal cases with a larger conspiracy storyline.
Danielle Deadwyler Leads the New Cast
The first confirmed star of the reboot is Danielle Deadwyler, who will play one of the two lead FBI agents. Deadwyler is widely known for powerful performances in films like Till, The Harder They Fall, and The Piano Lesson. Her casting signals that the reboot is aiming for serious acting talent alongside the supernatural thrills.
The actor playing the second FBI agent has not been announced yet. Casting for additional characters is still underway as the production prepares to shoot the pilot.
Will Mulder and Scully Return
Fans are obviously wondering about the original stars. The classic series followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
So far, neither actor has officially joined the reboot. However, Anderson has publicly supported the project and even suggested she might return if the opportunity feels right. Coogler has reportedly spoken with Anderson during development, keeping the door open for a potential cameo or appearance later. So the truth may still be out there. But, possibly in a surprise episode.
When Will The Reboot Release
At the moment, the project is still in the early stages. The pilot episode has been approved, but a release date has not been announced yet.
More casting news and production updates are expected later in 2026. Until then, fans of paranormal mysteries can start preparing their conspiracy boards again. Because if this reboot succeeds, the spooky investigations of The X-Files could return to television in a very big way.
