Thor: Love and Thunder has now release world wide a few hours ago and the previews have already been screened, which earned the God of Thunder’s fourth outing a lukewarm reception from critics. The film currently holds a 69% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a major disappointment for an MCU film in recent times after Eternals debacle. Read our full review here.
Actress Natalie Portman in a recent interview on the occasion of the film’s world wide release revealed that a large number of sequences and characters were cut from the film which didn’t end up in the theatrical version.
Thor: Love and Thunder Deleted Scenes Details
The actress has revealed shocking facts about the scenes she felt were great, but sadly ended up on the cutting room floor. She also talked about how director Taika Waititi is very much lenient about actors improvising or changing the plot.
“Taika was pretty gutsy about just letting us seriously change the plot because of certain choices we made in the scene and certain places we decided to go,” the actress said. “Some of it was right and some of it was not right. Some of it ended up in the film, some of it did not, but it was pretty incredible to get to play and to get to have that latitude in the emotional stuff, as well as the comedic stuff.”
“There were whole sequences, planets, characters, and worlds that didn’t end up in the movie that were hilarious and amazing and [that] we spent a lot of time and energy on, and certainly the entire crew also designing and conceiving. It’s just amazing how much great material is not in the film, considering how much great material is in it. Usually, it’s like, you’re just trying to get enough good stuff to put in the film, and this had overflow. So that was really surprising.”
More Emotional Scenes between Thor and Jane
Portman has revealed there were more emotional scenes between Thor Odinson and Mighty Thor which were cut from Thor: Love and Thunder and didn’t make it into the final cut.
“I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are some very emotional scenes. The interesting thing was how we had room to workshop them. We filmed 20 different versions of [one key scene]. There’s a few pivotal emotional scenes, but we did really, really different things, many different times.”
Scenes between Thor and Valkyrie
Valkyrie, portrayed by actress Tessa Thompson also had to lose some scenes to the cutting room. Valkyrie and Jane had scenes which showed their bonding instead of what appeared in the film as the two women becoming fast pals after Jane appears in the tiny little village of the Asgardians and picks up Mjolnir to become Lady Thor. Valkyrie, who’s the King of New Asgard welcomes her.
The actress has revealed that the cut scenes between Thor and Valkyrie were enough to make a spinoff of its own.
There’s enough material that she “would love as its own spinoff.” She added, “I’d be really, really happy if we could see that. Because there certainly is kind of a missing period in the film. … I feel like you don’t necessarily see how they’ve become close [in the film], and so I would definitely be open and excited to see that.”
