True Detective Season 4 is finally coming out on HBO after four years, with the official title True Detective: Night County. Since its premiere in 2014, Nic Pizzolatto’s hit crime anthology has created a stir. The HBO drama is known for its cast, as each season deals with a different series of crimes and the detectives attempting to solve them.
Plot and Cast of True Detective Season 4
Set in Middle America the show usually takes place in Ennis, Alaska over the cold winter months. True Detective Season 4 will center on detectives Jodie Foster’s Liz Danvers and Kali Reis’ Evangeline Navarro. They think something bad is about to happen when eight local men suddenly disappear. While others think the men became victims of Mother Nature, the true detectives suspect this could be the cold-blooded work of a killer.
HBO’s official synopsis for True Detective reads as follows: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro must confront their pasts and the dark truths lying underneath the Arctic ice.”
Over the previous three seasons, the show has seen Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, and Mahershala Ali as the main characters. In Season 4, the primary characters are Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The rest of the cast will include:

When Will It Come Out?
Despite being released in 2024, Season 4 has supposedly been in development since early 2019. Following Season 3, creator Nic Pizzolatto teased he had an idea for a fourth season. “It’s really, really wild. Where do you even go after this [season]? I just had a lead character who’s 35, 45 and 70 all at the same time and this mystery that has to reach false resolutions and keep going into the future without cheating the audience and all these complicated structural elements. But I have an idea that’s kind of crazy.”
At the time HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys told Deadline, “I think Nic [Pizzolatto] has ideas, but I don’t think he’s landed on anything that he feels passionately about. If Nic has an idea that he is excited about, we will talk about it but not rushing into anything.”
However, things got complicated when Pizzolatto signed a new contract with FX leaving the future of True Detective show with a big question mark. Despite that, Bloys asked fans to stay tuned. It was later announced that Spanish filmmaker Issa Lopez would take over the show. After Lopez came on board, Season 4 was officially greenlit with filming taking place in Iceland from November 2022 to April 2023.
True Detective Season 4 is set to debut on HBO on January 14, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
