Joe and Anthony Russo are American filmmakers who as an unison are called the Russo Brothers. They first shined in Hollywood after they were brought on board for helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014. The film was widely successful at the Box office as well as had garnered critical acclaim. This was a major success for the MCU as except Iron Man movies no other solo films were a guaranteed success. It also made Captain America an A-list superhero in the MCU alongside Iron Man. The film was deemed as one of the best MCU films ever. Considering this praise, the Russos got a call back to direct the 3rd Captain America film titled Captain America: Civil War. Although, the film felt like an Avengers 2.5.
However, seeing the way the Russo Brothers handle multiple characters with giving enough to each one of them made Marvel President Kevin Feigi realize their true potential. At that point of time, the latest Avengers film, Age of Ultron was critically bashed and not as big at the Box Office as its predecessor. After watching the film it was clear Joss Whedon was overwhelmed by the number of characters and storylines. Thus, keeping both these things in mind, The Russo Brothers were asked to helm the MCU’s climatic chapters of the Infinity Saga- Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Both the films were box office juggernauts where Infinity War grossed around $2.04 Billion worldwide and Endgame beat that as well with $2.79 Billion worldwide.
Endgame was the highest grossing film of all time until Avatar regained its position last year. This made Russo Brothers feature at #2 in the list of highest grossing directors, second to only the great Steven Spielberg. Although, after the grand culmination of the Infinity Saga, the Russo Brothers have taken a break from the MCU and focus on other projects like Extraction, Cherry or The Gray Man. However, recent rumors suggests that they might back at Marvel for a X-Men Reboot.
Are the Russo Brothers back for the X-Men?
The Russo Brothers who are currently busy promoting their upcoming film The Gray Man starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas and Dhanush. In a recent interview with AP Entertainment the Endgame director duo did break their silence upon their MCU return and their interest in X-Men.
Joe Russo said, “One of my prized possessions is Incredible Hulk No. 181, which is the first appearance of Wolverine. It’s an important part of my comic book collection. Wolverine being so essential to the X-Men, of course, that would be a fun project to work on and find a new way into it. But, I do think that that’s probably something that [Marvel Studios President and Marvel Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige] has rightfully put aside for a while to introduce some new characters to the world, and bring that back when it’s ready.”
While the MCU has largely not expressed any plans in any proper development of the X-Men films it is interesting to see how with each new release they’re hinting at it. The biggest came in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness where Patrick Stewart returned as Professor X in a cameo. Given the track record of the Russos thus far with multiple characters and their love for Wolverine’s character does suggest that this team up could take place.
The Russo Brothers have been hinting at their return in the MCU at some point in the future and what better way to do it than helming a X-Men film. The MCU seems to address the existence of the Mutants as Deadpool 3 is under production as well. So, it might as well be that Feigi has already reached out to the Russos to helm the X-Men reboot and they’re simply keeping it under wraps. Even Taron Egerton’s recent meeting with Marvel is raising Wolverine rumors, so you never know what is cooking there.
Let me know what you think of this? Would you want Russo Brothers directing the X-Men reboot? Marvel’s Thor: Love & Thunder will release on 7th July 2022. The Russo Brothers directed The Gray Man will start streaming on Netflix from 15th July 2022.
