One of the biggest releases of December 2023 was Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. DCEU was all set to go out with a bang, after all we’re talking about a sequel to a billion dollar movie – Aquaman. The James Wan directorial also happens to be the only DCEU film to breach $1 billion. Unfortunately, Warner Bros’ creative team wasn’t able to assemble a decent movie that worked coherently. This resulted a $205 million liability. Despite releasing in peak holiday season, Aquaman 2 has failed to find an audience as the film has only earned $145 million since its theatrical release on December 22nd. The film needs to make at least $410 million to break even. Based on current market trends, it doesn’t seem like the film is going to reach this number. Which is why I think Warner Bros. has announced its digital release date so soon.
Here’s When You Can Watch Aquaman 2 Online!
Based on a recent report by dvdreleases, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is all set to debut on digital and VOD platforms like Apple iTunes, Vudu and Amazon Prime Video on February 6th, 2024. This release date is in line with an earlier report that predicted the digital debut of the film based on other Warner Bros. films. DC has had three box office flops in 2023. If nothing changes then Aquaman 2 is going to be one of them. In August, Blue Beetle hit theaters on and then became available on PVOD on September 26th, 39 days later.
Here’s a look at all of the theatrical-to-online release dates from DC in 2023. Shazam! Fury of the Gods notably was available a mere three weeks after opening in theaters:
- Shazam! Fury of the Gods: March 17 to April 7 (21 days)
- The Flash: June 16 to July 18 (32 days)
- Blue Beetle: August 18 to September 26 (39 days)
If Warner Bros. took 39 days for Aquaman 2’s online release, then the film would’ve released on January 30th, 2024. However, it seems like the studio is interested to give the film a longer exclusive theatrical run. The film will enjoy the most theatre to online release window for any DCEU film released in 2023. Aquaman 2 will release online 46 days after its theatrical debut.
The sequel just like the original film is helmed by James Wan and stars Jason Momoa in the titular role along with Yahya Abdul Mateen II as Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Orm aka Ocean Master, Amber Heard as Mera and Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is playing in theatres near you.
