Batgirl was a new DCEU film that Warner Bros. was developing. The film stars Leslie Grace in the lead role and it is helmed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Christina Hodson who previously wrote Birds of Prey and is the writer for the upcoming Flash film has written the screenplay for the film. The film was in talks for a longtime and WB had greenlit the production of the film. However, now that the film has completed its principal photography and is well into post production we hear news that the film has been shelved by WB and Discovery. Earlier this month WB held an early screening for the film to see how people react to it. Reportedly that screening didn’t go so well as people found the film disappointing and not up to the mark of a superhero film.
The film was made on a budget of $90 Million. Given that $90 Million is nothing compared to the huge budgets superheroes films are made nowadays. However, I think the budget is enough to make a decent film. The film being cancelled because it up to the mark portrays the WB creative team in a pretty bad light. This cancellation proves that even if Marvel is struggling in its Phase 4 it is still well organized than DCEU. The mess that WB is desperately trying to clean is just got worst with this cancellation. Let’s take a look at what this cancellation signify for the entire DCEU as a whole.
What does Batgirl Cancellation mean for the DCEU?
Batgirl was supposed to add another superhero to the limited DC superheroes. Even Michael Keaton was rumor to star in the film where he’ll nit be playing a different character rather he’ll be reprising his Batman role. WB cancelled the film as they were confident that the film’s quality was so bad that they if released it in theatres they were just inviting a box office bomb. This is news disheartening for every movie fan. WB didn’t even think they could improve film in post-production they just cancelled it.
Considering that Batgirl was first intended to come out on HBO Max directly but later was switched to a theatrical release. Maybe this change was the reason the film wasn’t up to the industry standards. However, this cancellation has gotten fans worried about other upcoming DCEU films like Blue Beetle and Black Canary. Now, given that Blue Beetle also had the same transition like Batgirl from HBO Max to theatrical you would think that it might also get shelved.
Although, I think since Blue Beetle has already gotten a release date it is unlikely for the film to get shelved. But Black Canary, well that is a different case. Batgirl was supposed to set-up Black Canary’s back story it would make sense that the film might get cancelled as well. It is still pretty early for the film so a cancellation might end up saving WB some money, I mean that is if they have no confidence in the film. However, let’s be “cup half full” people and until we actually have an update on the films, let’s just say they’re safe for now.
DCEU’s next theatrical release is Black Adam that comes out on October 21st 2022.
