Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, the co-directors of the DC movie Batgirl, hope the film will eventually be released. After giving a fantastic performance in the musical film In The Heights, Leslie Grace secured a role as Barbara Gordon in her next endeavor. The Batgirl movie was filmed from November 2021 to March 2022, and HBO Max was expected to air it this year. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case as Warner Bros. abruptly cancelled the film despite it being nearly finished.

Industry folks and fans were surprised when the news first surfaced. In its official statement, Warner Bros. Discovery argues that the choice was simply a by-product of a strategic move that prioritises blockbuster production and streamlines the DCEU to resemble Disney’s MCU. Along with Grace, Michael Keaton’s Batman was set to make a comeback in the project after appearing in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash. Additionally, J.K. Simmons was slated to return to the DCEU as Commissioner Gordon of the GCPD.
In a recent interview with the French publication Skript, El Arbi and Fallah discussed their experience with Batgirl being cancelled when it was almost finished. Although they are realistic about their expectations, given that the film isn’t yet finished, they are hoping that WBD will finally permit them to finish it and release it to the public. They also discuss the support they received from other filmmakers, including James Gunn and Edgar Wright.
Fallah also talks about his attempt to use his phone to save footage of Batgirl. Al Arbi advised him to take a recording of it purely to have a copy of the brief scenes, particularly those that involve Keaton’s Batman. However, he discovered that he had been locked out of the Warner Bros. servers when he arrived there, denying him access.
Warner Bros.’s decision to cancel Batgirl without immediate plans to release it does not imply that they will never change their position. After all, Justice League provided the DCEU with a comparable experience. Although it’s not a given that Batgirl will experience the same outcome, the fact that it has happened before may be enough to spur supporters to organise a campaign.
