The first reaction to Blue Beetle is out, and the internet can’t stop praising it. After a rough time in theaters with Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, DCU is back in their A game with this film. Blue Beetle is the first DC film featuring a Latino superhero. Angel Manuel Soto’s movie stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Ryes, a young student who obtains superpowers after discovering an ancient alien relic. The film also stars George Lopez, Raoul Max, Bruna Marquezine, and Elpidia Carrillo, while Susan Sarandon plays the antagonist, Victoria Kord.

Umberto Gonzalez (The Wrap) – Blue Beetle is here & Latinos FINALLY have a superhero of their own reflected on the big screen. The film is so incredibly good, so unique & delivers on al fronts giving the superhero genre much-needed sazon! The film’s Tangerine Dream-inspired synthwave score also rocks.
Brandon Davis (ComicBook) – The ‘Blue Beetle’ movie is mostly a blast. Some are too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!), Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome. Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, and solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun.
Fico Cangiano (CineXpressPR) – Happy to report that Angel Manuel Soto’s ‘Blue Beetle; is defiantly a great time at the movies! Not only is it a fantastic introduction to Jaime Reyes as a character/hero, but also a love letter to the Latino culture, that focuses on family as its foundation.
Steven Weintraub (Collider) – Happy to report Angel Manuel Soto’s ‘Blue Beetle’ was so much better than I expected. He’s added his own flavor to the superhero genre by having the film focus on a tight-knit family and Latino culture. It’s fun, extremely funny, and he got away with a few jokes that floored me.”
POC Culture wrote, “#BlueBeetle is my favorite post-Nolan DC film.” And, after viewing the strong positive reactions on the internet, viewers might agree with this statement after its release. Blue Beetle is scheduled for theatrical release on August 18, 2023.
