Constantine is a 2005 movie which was adapted from DC’s Hellblazer. The film starred Keanu Reeves in the lead and titular role. The film was helmed by Francis Lawrence. Made on a budget of $70-100 million the film earned $230.9 million worldwide, not great financial success but not a complete failure as well. When it comes to comic book movies, Constantine will be a completely different watch today simply because how generic today’s comic book movies have become. However, in 2005 the film was not received overwhelmingly. Critics were not impressed with the film and fans were also iffy about it. With the revitalization of the DCU and the rise in Keanu Reeves’ fame fans have been demanding for a sequel as over the years the film has stood the test of time and garnered quite a bit of cult following. For many years, creators and actors have refused to give any updates on the sequel but now it looks like we might get some major update soon.
Constantine 2 Is Actually Happening?
Actor Keanu Reeves was recently in a Q&A on Reddit where he was asked about Constantine 2 and whether it is ever going to happen. Keanu Reeves had a short but exciting response to the fan’s question. The conversation looked like:
AMA Question: “Have you spoken with James Gunn at all in regards to ‘Constantine 2’? Hope we get to see it!”
Reeves: “Yes, and me too.”
In late January 2023, Reeves for the first time spoke about the sequel’s development and he offered a positive update on the project, “I don’t know if it was unfinished business but it was definitely a role that I loved. And I thought that Francis Lawrence, the director, did such amazing work. I loved playing that character, and I really enjoyed the film. I was like, [adopts Oliver Twist voice] ‘Can I please have some more?'”
Reeves spoke about how Warner Bros. actually never let the sequel happen. Reeves always wanted to do it but the production house always denied it, “I kept asking almost every year. I’d be like, ‘Can I please?’ [and] they’d be like, ‘No, no!'”
Reeves express how he would love to make the sequel something sequel, “So it’s exciting. It’s almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in, and I guess get out of the playground and prepare a meal. But I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully it can happen. You don’t know how these things go. But I’m definitely going to try my darndest to try and realize that dream.”
Akiva Goldman also talked about the sequel’s plot, “The new film expands on the themes the original brought, about maintaining the barrier between earth and the evil creatures that are on the other side.”
Goldman expressed how Reeves is the reason for the sequel as he is so passionate about it, “This is a credit to Keanu [Reeves], who endlessly has said, ‘this is the character I want to return to… Finally, he said it enough times that it stuck… So I’m coming out of the gate fast. We’re doing it with JJ Abrams, and Francis and Keanu and I have been pretty deep in the story-breaking stage.”
Constantine is available for streaming on Netflix. Constantine 2 doesn’t have release at the time of writing.
