DCEU is on the verge of a rebirth as it is now been renamed to DCU. Warner Bros. It was clear that if they plan on building cinematic universe, then there has to be one person helming it who has a clear vision regarding all the content that comes out and how everything will culminate together. Basically, they wanted their own Kevin Feigi and after months of search they finally appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC after they fired Walter Hamada. The duo took some major decisions yesterday and it looks like the first wave of decision taken by Gunn and Safran is facing some serious backlash from fans. All DC fans are upset by the amount of cancellations that have taken place in a span of one day. Many fans took their anger out on Twitter and #FireJamesGunn trended quite a bit. As we know James Gunn is not someone to stay silent on a matter so naturally he has responded to the angry DC fans.
James Gunn Responds To Angry DC Fans!
Following the barrage of reports from The Hollywood Reporter, The Wrap and Deadline 7th December had a lot of DC news where mostly it was about how most of the DC movies that were in development are being cancelled as they don’t necessarily fit into Gunn and Safran’s vision for the new DCU. The reports included cancellations of movies like Wonder Woman 3, Man of Steel 2, Recasting of all Justice league Characters, Michael Keaton’s Batman reboot to be shelved, Jason Momoa to be cast as Lobo, etc.
In the wake of all these reports, James Gunn took to Twitter and responded as he was facing massive backflash from DC fans. He addressed that the reports that have come out have some truth in them but not all truth. He also said that decisions on matters have yet to be taken. However, he was expecting fans to react in this manner as any transformation phase has moments like this. The filmmaker tweeted:
“So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not. Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we’re still just beginning. Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.
But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not. We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives. As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer.”
DCU’s next movie: Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated to release in theatres on 17th March 2023.
