Henry Cavill starrer Man of Steel (2013) has a huge cult following and was also highly profitable, so obviously a sequel was planned by DC. The original plan when the movie was in development was to create a Superman trilogy like Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. However, in the mean time considering the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Warner Bros. decided to change plans and start making a universe right away. So, they switched the Man of Steel sequel with a Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, so that they could introduce various superheroes of this universe like Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. However, the plan backfired as Dawn of Justice didn’t work out that well critically but it was once again profitable. After that I think we’re all aware of Justice League crisis of 2017.
How Snyder faced a personal tragedy and Whedon took over and ruined his vision, only for fans to erupt. After years of campaigning, fans got to see Snyder’s version of the Justice League. However, between everything that was happening, Warner Bros. forgot the very first thing they’d set out to do – a Superman trilogy. Fans have been craving for a sequel for years but that have received nothing but disappointment. Now, it looks like there is more to come as Henry Cavill has been officially sacked as Superman after announcing his return just last month.
Henry Cavill Announces His Exit as Superman Amid DC Shake-Up!
Henry Cavill had announced his official return as Superman in October. However, last week we have heard many reports that DC Heads James Gunn and Peter Safran were working out their plan for DC for the next ten years. This meant cancellation of a lot of films that were in development. Including Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill’s much awaited Man of Steel 2. While these reports were not confirmed we were not sure whether this is a true update or some random rumor.
However, as Patty Jenkins officially announced Wonder Woman 3’s cancellation, Henry Cavill too announced his exit as Superman today on Instagram. Cavill wrote an extremely emotional note where he addressed that in a recent meeting with Gunn and Safran, Cavill was asked to step down as Superman. Cavill’s note was mature and understanding as he simply addressed his fans and thanked them for their support throughout all these years. I feel extremely sad writing this article as I was genuinely excited to have Cavill back as Superman.
Here’s Henry Cavill’s Announcement:
As per Deadline, Gunn and Safran want the DCU to start anew and hence do not want to have any baggage from Snyderverse. It looks like in their grand ten year plan, Henry Cavill’s Superman doesn’t have a place. This is not good as that means Cavill has lost two franchises back to back – The Witcher and after that Superman. He left The Witcher for this but unfortunately it looks like his Superman is not getting another movie after all. This directly means that the Man of Steel franchise is dead and there will be a new Superman cast.
Unless Gunn and Safran have a different role for Cavill in their new DCU like his co-star Jason Momoa, it looks like Cavill is done for good. It looks like there is more to come for his fans as Henry Cavill has seemingly quit The Witcher universe for nothing but an 8 seconds cameo as Superman in Flash which also will now be removed. It has been a truly devasting time for Henry Cavill, Superman, and Witcher fans and there is absolutely nothing now that can be done about it. So, it looks like we are all about to see hashtags asking to fire James Gunn or bring back Cavill in the coming few months. But considering how usually strong-willed James Gunn is, its in vain to hope for any of that to happen.
Man of Steel is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video or HBO Max.
