From the moment it was announced, Black Adam was supposed to revolutionize the DCEU (now DCU). It was marketed as the Superhero film that the hour needs. Something that we had to see. The movie in my opinion had taken all the right calls, especially cast Dwayne Johnson as the titular character. Given the year that we’ve had where every superhero film has disappointed us except for The Batman, I was really looking forward to this film as I genuinely wanted to be enthralled by a superhero film, like I did when I was 16. I felt sad when Black Adam didn’t turn out to be the film that I wanted. It is not a revolution that the DCEU needs. Its quiet simply a film that is self aware and invests heavily in action sequences and doesn’t pay heed to its screenplay which is one of the weakest of the year.
The most disappointing part of the film was Dwayne Johnson himself as I’ve not seen a more one dimensional performance from him before. Despite having so much riding on it, the film only after 31 days of its theatrical debut released on Digital. The reason for the same is assumed to be the poor box office performance of the DCU flick. However, the Rock clarified that the movie is not a flop and is in fact making profits. Despite that there are reports that say the movie is facing a loss of at least $50-100 Million. After Black Adam’s release the rumors of the film spawning a sequel were going around. However, with everything happening at DC, it looks like we’re not going to see Black Adam for a long time or at least Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
No Black Adam For DC!
After Henry Cavill’s exit, it seems like there is another heavy hitter that is leaving the DCU after James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over. So, Dwayne Johnson who debuted this year in the DCU as Black Adam has announced that he is done with DC movies, for now and announced his temporary retirement which might convert into a permanent one. Dwayne Johnson issued a statement on Twitter where he addressed the shake-ups at DC and his character’s future amidst all the changes. The Rock said:
“My passionate friends, I wanted to give you a long-awaited Black Adam update regarding the character’s future in the new DC Universe. James Gunn and I connected, and Black Adam will not be in their first chapter of storytelling. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters. James and I have known each other for years and have always rooted for each other to succeed. It’s no different now, and I will always root for DC (and Marvel) to win and WIN BIG.
You guys know me, and I have very thick skin – and you can always count on me to be direct with my words. “These decisions made by James and DC leadership represent their vision of DCU through their creative lens. After 15 years of relentless hard work to finally make ‘Black Adam’, I’m very proud of the film we delivered for fans worldwide. I will always look back on the fan reaction to Black Adam with tremendous gratitude, humility and love. We did great.
To my very passionate and vocal Black Adam/Super Hero genre fans – I love you, THANK YOU, and I will ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOU and do my best to deliver and entertain you. What a helluva month – now we all need some Teremana! Have a productive week and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your families!”
DC boss James Gunn reacted to The Rock’s statement by sharing his excitement to work with him. James Gunn replied, “Love @TheRock & I’m always excited to see what he & Seven Bucks do next. Can’t wait to collaborate soon.”
Black Adam is helmed by Jungle Cruise’s Jaume Collett-Serra, and will star Dwayne the Rock Johnson in the lead role of Black Adam.
