We finally have an update for the long-awaited Nightwing movie from DC, however, it is not what many of us would have wanted. Like many recent projects at DC Studios (eg: Batgirl and Arrowverse), this one too has been scrapped after 5 years since its announcement. This comes after the financial troubles at Warner Bros. and because of the revamping of the DC-verse by James Gunn. While Gunn has announced a series of movies for the new DCU, the Nightwing movie exploring Dick Grayson’s arc by Christopher McKay has been abandoned.
No Future For Nightwing?
Richard John “Dick” Grayson, is one of the most popular renditions of Batman’s partner Robin. Grayson retires as Robin in Tales of the Teen Titans (#44) and assumes his own trajectory as a superhero known as Nightwing. After his parents get murdered by Tony Zucco, Bruce Wayne takes him in as his legal ward, training him to fight crimes alongside him. Grayson also fills in as Batman at times, although he maintains that Nightwing is a hero of his own. Grayson has also been associated with Batgirl in the comics.
When @HomeofDCU, on Twitter wished for the fact that the Nightwing movie still comes into fruition, Umberto Gonzales from The Wrap replied “that project is dead”. With the Nightwing movie cancelled, one can hope for his presence in the upcoming Batman movie in Batman: The Brave and The Bold, which explores the relationship between Bruce and his biological son, Damian. It would be intriguing to see the contrast between Damian and Dick, with the different dynamics of parent-child relationship that they share with Batman — and we can always hope for a new Batman movie in the Gunn-Safran universe.
