Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods is the sequel to the 2019 film Shazam! The film is directed by David F. Sandberg who helmed the original film as well. The film is based on DC’s character Shazam! named after the wizard. The character was previously known as Captain Marvel. The 2019 film was a rare diamond in DC’s collection of coals. The film amassed critical acclaim as well as collected huge numbers at the Box Office. Shazam! was praised for its fresh take on the exhausted Superhero genre. Seeing the success of the original film, WB greenlit a sequel and they were smart enough not to change the main ingredients of the first film. The film was obviously delayed due to the pandemic. However, it soon picked up pace once the pandemic ceased to exist. The first trailer of the film was revealed at SDCC’22.
The sequel was wall set to hit theatres in late 2022 but last August we got an update that it has been once again delayed along with Aquaman 2 as well. The reason for it was supposed to be the extensive post production work and while it might be true, I think the main reason was to simply avoid a fatal clash with Avatar: The Way of Water which is demolishing every box office record right now. This might be the smartest choice DC has made in a while. Regardless it has been a lot time since and nothing much has happened. The new release date of the film is also getting near and in accordance to that David Sandberg has given us an update about the sequel’s new trailer.
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods- Director Shares An Update About The New Trailer!
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods’ director recently revealed the release of the new trailer for the film. On his Instagram, Sandberg posted a story where he looks like he is an theatre set-up in a studio. He is working with his team on the new trailer, and this is not my assumption, he has said this in an extremely unavoidable text that is in the story. He said, “Really liking this new trailer!” Sandberg then cheekily, at the bottom wrote that we will get to see the trailer very soon. His exact words were, “(You’ll see it before the month is over)”

Even if there is a new trailer on the way I don’t know how much new footage it will feature. The year started for DC with promoting Shazam 2 with the same footage from trailer one. Last year was not a particularly good one for DC as except for The Batman they only released Black Adam which bombed at the box office and was a critical failure as well. I know a lot of attention currently is on the happening at DC after Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2 are released but there is a real possibility Shazam 2 might be relevant to the new DCU as well.
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods is slated to release theatres near you on 17th March 2023.
