One of the few DC movies that are releasing this year is Shazam 2 which is a sequel to the 2019 hit film – Shazam! The film starred Zachary Levi and Asher Angel in the lead role, while the film was written and directed by David Sandberg. Out of all the superheroes that are a part of the DCEU, Shazam seems to be the most likely to transition into DCU especially because of the close relation between newly appointed DC Co-Head Peter Safran as he was the producer for the 2019 film. That being said the sequel will have to prove itself on the box office to seal the fate of Shazam otherwise it would also face the Warner Bros. Discovery’s axe. Given how close we’re to the release date of the film, the marketing for the same should begin and it looks like it is starting with a new trailer.
Shazam 2: New Trailer To Drop On Republic Day!
The first trailer for the Shazam sequel dropped during the San Diego Comic Con 2022, since we haven’t gotten any new footage from the film. The new trailer dropping in January was teased earlier by director Sandberg as he’d shared a photo of the editing room on his Instagram story where he’d promised the trailer would be out before this month ends. It looks like he has kept his promise well. Once again, Instagram story seems to be the way for announcing updates about the new trailer for the film.
Warner Bros. Brazil shared a story where they claim a new trailer for the will drop today on 26th January 2023.
The new trailer will come out just before James Gunn and Peter Safran reveal their slate for the upcoming batch of DC movies. The duo had promised that the slate will be revealed before the end of January and considering that we’re simply 5 days from the month coming to a close, it feels like the Co-heads would be revealing the slate very soon. This can be a good way for taking all the attention away from Marvel as these last days of January would be flooded with DC news given the new Shazam trailer and the new slate.
After which February would also bring us the brand new Flash trailer and all this is happening before the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. These look like tactical moves planned simply to try to overshadow the upcoming Marvel blockbuster, whether they’ll be successful in that, we’ll have to see. The announcement came with a new synopsis of the film:
“Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.”
Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods is slated to release theatres near you on 17th March 2023.
