Superman: Legacy - Cast Frontrunners Revealed

The curious case of Henry Cavill has to be one of the most interesting case studies for someone to do 25 years later. A man who was idolized by many for playing a particular character, except for the studio who never believed in him and then when they finally came around, the new boss changed the entire narrative of the universe making a recast inevitable. Cavill didn’t only lose his Superman job but also his titular role in Netflix’s The Witcher as he’d left the latter for the former assignment. Cavill was believed to be one of the best actors to play Superman, however, sadly he is getting replaced even if you approve or not. So, who would you like to see don the cape of hope next? Taking Cavill’s legacy forward? Well, it looks like DC already has frontrunners for the role.

DC’s Top Three Choices For Superman!

As the script for the reboot is complete- DC has already started looking at perfect candidates to replace Henry Cavill. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC’s current top three choices for Superman in the Superman reboot are:

  1. David Corenswet: The actor starred in Ti West’s Pearl last year. Ever since then, the world is literally begging DC to give Superman’s part to Corenswet. Be it his physique, charm or whatever, but he has clearly made an impression on makers of this film and the fans. He is also in his late 20s which fits the requirements easily.
  2.  Tom Brittney: The British actor also seems to be on the line to play the role of Superman. He has previously starred as Reverend Will Davenport in ITV’s Grantchester. Brittney was also part of films like Make Me Famous and Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.
  3. Andrew Richardson: The last contender in the Superman race according to The Hollywood Reporter is Richardson who has starred in as Kevin Conrad in The Independent and Vince in Killer Among Us.

Fans should also note that there is supposed to be a screen testing round after Memorial Day which might narrow down the options furthermore or give us a new name altogether. Now that we’ve taken a look at the Superman casting choices let’s see who DC deems fit to replace Amy Addams as Lois Lane:

  1. Rachel Brosnahan: She is the oldest choice for the role (32), ideally the studio is looking for someone younger. The actress is said to have given an amazing audition. Brosnahan is an Emmy winning actress for her titular role in Amazon Prime’s period comedy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
  2. Emma Mackey: I don’t think she needs any introduction. Fans might know her from Sex Education and Death on the Nile. She is 27 years old and definitely about to become a big name in Hollywood. Her next movie releases this summer- Barbie.
  3. Phoebe Dynevor: Known for her work in Netflix’s steamy romantic drama series, Bridgerton as Daphne Bridgerton, the British star (28) too is being considered for the role as the Daily Planet reporter.
  4. Samara Weaving: The final name capping off the list is the 31-years-old Weaving who recently starred as Laura Crane in Scream VI and also in Damien Chazelle’s 2022 love letter to the Golden Age of Hollywood- Babylon.

While all this is quite interesting, the biggest surprise in THR’s list has to be Nicholas Hoult being considered for the role of Lex Luthor. The actor just starred in the Dracula adaptation- Renfield along with Nicholas Cage. Apparently, he was close to getting the Batman role for Matt Reeves’ recent movie.

James Gunn has been bullied by fans to give them an update on the casting decision for Superman and the filmmaker is usual very candid, “It’s hard, but we’re looking and we actually have some really great choices, which I’m excited about. But it has to be somebody who has all of the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has. And it has to be somebody that you want to give a hug.”

The official synopsis of Superman: Legacy reads, Superman Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy is the first movie in the new DC slate and is supposed to release on 11th July 2025.
