Superman: Legacy is the first film that will release in DC’s new slate of movies. It would mark the beginning of the chapter called Gods and Monsters. The film won’t be an origin story even though the film is set in Superman’s early years when he is trying to balance his superhero and normal life. Given that Gunn-Safran need an actor around 25-30 years old, Henry Cavill is out of the running. We don’t know who the duo is eye as their new Man of Steel. We haven’t gotten any leaks regarding the matter as well. The film is supposed to release in Summer 2025, so the production must start late this year or early next year. Meaning we will certainly get casting updates very soon. While the lead actor of the film might be in question, the movie has finally found its director!
James Gunn Is Directing Superman: Legacy?
Speaking with ComicPop, DC comics writer Tom King shared an interesting detail about the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie. The writer was asked if he can share any inside details of DC’s creative committee and the work that has been going on since Gunn and Safran took over. King was hesitant to answer this as he admitted it is difficult for him to reveal any details at this stage but he quickly explained the process of building the studio’s “creative force.” However, this is not the big news. While talking about Gunn and Safran, the comic book writer subtly hinted that Gunn has officially taken over as the writer and director for Superman: Legacy.
King said, “I mean, it’s tough because, there’s stuff I can talk about, and stuff I can’t… It’s a totally fair question. I mean, James Gunn is a super nerd and he’s super creative, right? He’s the writer and director of the Superman movie and he’s sort of the creative force behind all of this, him and Peter Safran. And he reached out to a group of screenwriters and myself, fantastic, amazing… whose names he’s put out there, to work on making these movies and TV shows as good as they can be.”
This updates goes in line with a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter that stated James Gunn to be the top contender to direct Superman: Legacy. If you remember the DC slate announcement then you know that Peter Safran always wanted James Gunn to direct the Superman reboot and it looks like he has finally convinced his partner in doing so.
Superman: Legacy is the first movie in the new DC slate and is supposed to release on 11th July 2025.
