The new DC slate has finally been announced! It is not what we expected. I know each one of us will have different reactions to it but if we’re being honest here then the slate has been slightly disappointing and this is coming from someone who has constantly criticized Marvel for the past two years, so you know that this is serious. As we were expecting there is a Superman movie and in fact once again it is the first movie in the new cinematic universe. However, this time it won’t be played by fan favorite Henry Cavill which was a concern for every Snyderverse fan. I’m witnessing their outburst on Twitter. However, there is a reason for which he can’t play the new Superman and in all honesty it is quite a valid reason which makes total sense. Let’s see what it is.
The New Superman Has A Much Younger Superman!
Superman: Legacy is not an origin story even though the film is set in Superman’s early years when he is trying to balance his superhero and normal life. The film is written by James Gunn and he may or may not direct it. The Hollywood Reporter has recently revealed in a new report that the new Clark Kent has to be around 25 years old. For reference Henry Cavill will celebrate his 40th birthday this year. I’m aware that it isn’t a retelling of his childhood story but it is also not the story when he is in his late 20s or early 30s which we’d predicted.
Collider also reported that James Gunn has already commented on Superman’s age and the stage of life he has to be in to fit into the new DCU. In the same statement he also addressed Batman’s age and life stage. Gunn had said, “He’s working. He’s a reporter. He’s at the Daily Planet. Again, we’re coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed. So, does that mean Batman might be a couple years older than Superman? Yes, it could be.”
The new Superman being twenty five is not a bad thing. It suggests he is early in his career and is a bit naive about what he does as he is just starting out but he is old enough for James Gunn to tackle some mature themes and or sequences. While Batman’s exact is kept a mystery but the fact that he has a 12 year old son, it suggests that he is at least in his 30s. He should not be in his 40s otherwise it will be too similar to Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder’s version, which would furthermore erupt fans.
Superman: Legacy is the first movie in the new DC slate and is supposed to release on 11th July 2025.
