The Batman and Gunn-Safran's DCU Will Be Separate, Confirms Director!

DCEU is now DCU and that missing ‘E’ actually accounts for a lot. There has been a lot of things happening at DC and as James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebuilding the broken DCU, they have to be smart enough not to make a complete revamp and rather use the working pieces and brush off the weeds. We know that Henry Cavill’s Superman is not something that fits in their new universe and Gal Gadot or the character of Wonder Woman also won’t be in the first batch of movies to come out. As far as other actors like Jason Momoa, Zachary Levi and Ezra Miller are concerned their fate is left undecided as of yet. However, along with all these superheroes DC wasn’t going to forget their most famous – Batman. Gunn and Safran were tasked to limit the amount of Batmen that exist in different universes at the same time.

This worried fans they thought, either the newly formed franchise of Matt Reeves’ Batman would be shelved or somehow be connected in the new DCU and why not- I think Robert Pattinson’s Batman has impressed fans and critics alike. However, his inclusion in the DCU may give them a good Batman but that certainly compromise the arc Reeves had planned for the dark knight. The concern of fans was valid but thankfully James Gunn and Matt Reeves has understood that it is better to keep the DCU and The Batman franchise away from each other.

The Batman and DCU Will Co-exist!

Matt Reeves has been quite vocal about his plans for the Batman franchise. Just yesterday, the director had confirmed that the scripting process of the film is in full flow. Now, in a recent interview with Yahoo, Matt Reeves talked about working with James Gunn and Peter Safran and co-existing with them rather then shoving the Batman franchise in the new DCU. This update from the filmmaker has clarified that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will exist as a separate entity and franchise outside of the confines of the Gunn-Safran’s DCU.

Reeves talked about his relationship with James Gunn and Peter Safran and said, “We’ve talked a few times… I’m supposed to get together with [James Gunn] and Peter [Safran] sometime this month. They’ve been working feverishly on what they’re doing, and I’ve been working hard with my partners on what we’re doing — all our shows and stuff.”

Reeves added about the future of the Batman franchise, “So we’re gonna have a sit-down where we talk about everything that’s going on and what the arcs of these two things are. I’m excited to hear about what they’re doing.” A clear indication that both universes have nothing to do with each other. The Batman won’t just be movie franchise as many TV shows are also being planned by Reeves and it won’t simply come down to Batman’s story. Many characters through various pieces of content will be explored.

The Batman is reported to spawn other spin-off series as well and they will focus on the Arkham Asylum. The series recently brought on board Antonio Campos who directed The Devil All The Time as its showrunner, hinting that the series is in early development just like the other villain spin-off movies. Three movies are rumored to surround around Professor Pyg, Scarecrow, and Clayface and are reportedly in the early stages of development. As a result, these projects could premiere after The Batman 2 at the earliest.

The Batman is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
