The Flash

The Hollywood Reporter claims that The Flash will have an opening weekend of around $70 million in the domestic markets. This figure is even lower than 2017’s Justice League which had an opening weekend of $93 million despite being an absolute abomination of a film. What is interesting is there is a contrasting report from Box Office Pro which shows that Andres Muschietti’s superhero flick will earn around $115-$140 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. The huge difference in numbers between the two reports is concerning for DC. Despite there being so much buzz, the film unfortunately isn’t getting those huge numbers. If The Flash doesn’t prove to be a financial success then it would be the third box office failure for DC on a trot.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom which will be releasing late this year is most likely to be an abomination at the box office given the terrible test screening reports. DC is in serious trouble if all their four films turn out to be flops. Hopefully The Flash lives up to its buzz and brings in some success. However, if the franchise intends to thrive in the James Gunn – Peter Safran’s DCU then there is a box office target the film needs to earn. Let’s see what it is.

The Flash 2 Will Happen Under One Condition!

The Flash 2’s script is written and ready to go into production but it will only yield a result if the first The Flash film achieves a specific box office target. So, The Wrap reports that The Flash 2 will be greenlit only if The Flash, which is coming out in two weeks time, comes close to The Batman’s $770 million worldwide box office. The report further describes that the script for The Flash 2 has been penned down by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (Aquaman’s writer) and if a sequel does happen then The Flash 2’s story will take place outside of the  James Gunn’s DC Universe, working as a standalone story in the style of The Batman – Part 2 and Joker: Folie à Deux.

Andres Muschietti (IT) will helm The Flash, and Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Batgirl) will pen the story. Additionally, it will feature the Bruce Wayne/Batman characters played by Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, as well as Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdu as Nora Allen, Ian Loh as a young Barry Allen, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso in unspecified roles.

The Flash is slated for a theatrical release on June 23, 2023.
