The Flash is hyped enough I feel. Ever since the first test screening responses were out, The Flash was being compared with The Dark Knight, the holiest comic book movie ever made. Translation: Best Superhero Movie of All Time. Despite the negativity, the film managed to turn the tide in its favor because of such huge claims from DC executives and even some living legends like Stephen King- Master of Horror. The reviews from critics aren’t that flattering which makes sense as Hollywood critics have some kind of aversion for DC movies. The film has a 10/10 IMDb score for now, which is crazy even if I know that it will drop drastically after release. So, does this overwhelming love translating into box office numbers? Not really.
The Flash Will Be Another Box Office Dud?
The Hollywood Reporter claims that The Flash will have an opening weekend of around $70 million in the domestic markets. This figure is even lower than 2017’s Justice League which had an opening weekend of $93 million despite being an absolute abomination of a film. What is interesting is there is a contrasting report from Box Office Pro which shows that Andres Muschietti’s superhero flick will earn around $115-$140 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
The huge difference in numbers between the two reports is concerning for DC. Despite there being so much buzz, the film unfortunately isn’t getting those huge numbers. If The Flash doesn’t prove to be a financial success then it would be the third box office failure for DC on a trot. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom which will be releasing late this year is also likely to be an abomination at the box office given the terrible test screening reports. DC is in serious trouble if all their four films turn out to be flops. Hopefully The Flash lives up to its buzz and brings in some success.
Andres Muschietti (IT) will helm The Flash, and Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Batgirl) will pen the story. Additionally, it will feature the Bruce Wayne/Batman characters played by Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, as well as Sasha Calle as Supergirl, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdu as Nora Allen, Ian Loh as a young Barry Allen, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso in unspecified roles.
The Flash is slated for a theatrical release on June 23, 2023.
