The Ugly Story Behind Wonder Woman 3 Cancellation!

I still believe out of whatever the DCEU has given us Wonder Woman remains the best. I’m still in awe of that background score. However, same cannot be said about the sequel-Wonder Woman 1984. After the first film, Diana continued to appear in both Whedon’s Justice League (2017) and Snyder’s Justice League (2021). The sequel was once again set in a different time than the recent events of the DCEU but everything with the sequel felt forced and wrong. I was extremely disappointed to watch the steep quality drop of the second film in comparison to the first. The film’s critical reception was dire and it wasn’t successful on the box office either. Considering all this including the changes at Warner Bros. I was unsure if we’ll be getting a threequel and it turns out my fear was valid. If recent reports are to be believed, then Wonder Woman 3 has been cancelled but before we start to blame Warner Bros. Discovery for this harsh call, let’s hear both sides to the story.

Wonder Woman 3 might still happen?

According to a recent, Warner Bros. Discovery is still interested to produce a Wonder Woman 3 but if that is to happen it has to be without Patty Jenkins. If reports are to be believed then DC’s new Heads James Gunn and Peter Safran didn’t have a problem with the idea of a Wonder Woman 3 but the direction in which Patty Jenkins was taking the film is not acceptable for them. The studio had asked Jenkins to pitch a different movie but she didn’t want that. Warner Bros. is still interested to make the final Wonder Woman movie wit Gal Gadot.

However, if that is to happen then Gadot has to return without Patty Jenkins, with whom she has developed a strong working relationship. So, there is still hope for Wonder Woman 3 however, I don’t think Gadot would return without Jenkins. Although, there is more to this story as reported cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 is more of Jenkins fault as she fought with Warner Bros. execs in a very a ugly way. As soon as the cancellation news hit the internet, DCU co-lead James Gunn commented that “some of [the report] is true, some of it is half-true, [and] some of it is not true.”

The Wrap did a recent report on Wonder Woman 3’s cancellation and it doesn’t portray Patty Jenkins in the right light. The report revealed a lot of things like Warner Bros. Executives Mike DeLuca and Pamela Abdy had reached out to Jenkins in order to inform her that the direction in which she wants to take the third film is not fitting the studio’s plan. They are worried that the third movie will fall into the same structural problems that Wonder Woman 1984 fell into. Their email said, “didn’t think [the third film’s script]  was the right direction for the franchise.”

They further asked her, “pitching something else for the IP in another direction.” However, Jenkins stuck to her vision and that is not a problem but then she toxically snapped at the executives by sending an extremely passive aggressive mail. Jenkins reply said, “they were wong, that they didn’t understand her, didn’t understand the character, didn’t understand character arcs and didn’t understand what Jenkins was trying to.”The email also included a Wikipedia link to “Character Arc” for the executives to check out. That’s cold.

The report also said that Jenkins doesn’t want to hear anything from Co-DC Head Peter Safran even though he had nothing to do with the decision of not going with her version of Wonder Woman 3. The Wrap’s report also had an insider who said that the filmmaker doesn’t want to hear anything the newly installed DCU lead had to say: “She just doesn’t want to allow them to have a seat at the table to have an opinion on something new that she might come up with” Its important to note that neither Patty Jenkins nor Warner Bros. Discovery have commented or confirmed these reports.

Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
