DCU

The DCEU might be in the weirdest spot in Hollywood right now. Be it anything, from every side it seems like DC is going through their worst phase and they thought the 2017 Justice League crashing at the box office was bad. There is the recent Discovery and Warner Bros. merger that is leading to all kinds money cuts. The money cuts led to the cancellation of various previously greenlit projects, including Batgirl that was almost complete. There is the backlash coming from that cancellation and I think most importantly it was Ezra Miller’s various illegal actions that reflected badly on Warner Bros. After the Batgirl movie cancellation fans were asking why is Warner Bros. cancelling Batgirl but they’d let the reshoots for The Flash film to happen even if the film stars a known felon. Well, no one answered that question.

However, after the merger with Discovery one thing confirmed that there are some big changes afoot, for better or worse? Well, that is to be seen. The recent exit of DC Studios Head Walter Hamada was one of the big changes. We’ve been hearing for a quite a longtime that DC is planning a total reshuffle of its content and wants to start anew. Moving forward they wish to create something like the MCU or better and for that they need a Kevin Feigi. After months of searching, they’ve finally found them- James Gunn and Peter Safran. Just a month later after announcing the new DC heads, it looks like Warner Bros. already has a plan to make the DCU as big as the MCU.

What is Warner Bros’ Master Plan for DC?

David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery has admitted that Marvel has done a better job when it comes to building an on-screen cinematic universe and going forward, he wants the DCU to do the same by addressing their shortcomings in comparison to the MCU and creating a 10 year plan. Zaslav mentioned that DC is at the top of his list when it comes to changes he wishes to see at Warner Bros. Discovery under his supervision. Zaslav admitted that the MCU is seven to eight times bigger than the DCU.

The idea to mirror Marvel’s methods is also includes the vision of its small-screen counterpart, with HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey pointing out that she wants to use the streaming service to support the overarching story of the movies. Along with this Zaslav has now given us another solid update regarding the future of the DCU and the masterplan that they’ve been talking about. Zaslav recently spoke with Deadline where he discussed the possibilities where the DCU could go with the newly found DC Heads.

Zaslav mentioned, “[DC is] a hugely undervalued asset. Disney did a wonderful job with Marvel. But if you looked at Marvel and DC ten years ago, you would have said DC is as good or better. But Marvel is a connected universe. It has a ‘bible.’ The key was having one person following everything. All of Marvel is one place. You don’t wake up and find that there has been a Batman TV show someplace.”

“DC is one of the biggest opportunities [for] this company. Our company is a creative company and so we found two great guys. You will see a lot of growth around DC. We haven’t done a Superman movie in 13 years.”

DCU’s next film- Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will release in theatres near you next year on 17th March 2023.
