Wonder Woman 3

Wonder Woman is an iconic DC character that first appeared in December 1941. Created by American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston, and artist Harry G. Peter. Marston’s wife, Elizabeth, and their life partner, Olive Byrne, are credited as being his inspiration for the character’s appearance. Diana is an Amazonian Princess from Themyscira. She is Zeus’s daughter. Considering the popularity of the character in the comics there was a TV show about the character where Lynda Carter played the titular role. The show ended after three seasons and Wonder Woman didn’t appear in anything major ever since until 2011, when there was another TV show in the works but it was never greenlit by a network and it got stuck at the pilot stage.

Diana didn’t return to the big screen until Zack Snyder’s Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The character was played by Gal Gadot. After her brief appearance in BvS. Wonder Woman returned with her solo film set in World War I which was directed by Patty Jenkins. The film was extremely successful critically and financially. I still believe out of whatever the DCEU has given us Wonder Woman remains the best. I’m still in awe of that background score. However, same cannot be said about the sequel-Wonder Woman 1984. After the first film, Diana continued to appear in both Whedon’s Justice League (2017) and Snyder’s Justice League (2021). The sequel was once again set in a different time than the recent events of the DCEU but everything with the sequel felt forced and wrong.

I was extremely disappointed to watch the steep quality drop of the second film in comparison to the first. The film’s critical reception was dire and it wasn’t successful on the box office either. Considering all this including the changes at Warner Bros. I was unsure if we’ll be getting a threequel. However, after a recent interview from director Patty Jenkins we have confirmation that there is indeed a third film in the franchise.

Wonder Woman 3: Patty Jenkins has Completed the Script?

Patty Jenkins who directed both the Wonder Woman films and co-wrote the second film appeared at the Matera Film Festival in Italy as a guest, where she provided an extremely hopeful and positive update about Wonder Woman 3.

The Rogue Squadron Director said, “Well that’s a funny question because every single time I’ve done this… I always thought… After making Monster, which you just saw, I didn’t ever think that I would ever be a tentpole director. I thought I was going to do a lot of different kinds of things. However, I believe in Wonder Woman and I found it so powerful to make something where you can try to not only inspire [yourself] to be better through it but also try to help to be one of the people modeling that for myself and for others through this metaphor. And so I see myself hooked.”

She further continued with, “And so, where I said that I was only going to do one, then oh my god, I have to do two. And then, I find myself saying, ‘Oh my god, I’m antsy to do three.’ And so, even now, I say, ‘That’s it’ because I always plan a three-movie arc. There is a story that goes through these three different movies as a whole. But even now, I just wrote last week the final scene of Wonder Woman 3 and I thought, I might be interested to see what happens next. So you’ll never know. They have asked us to think of ways to do more and it accidentally happens. But you’ll never know. I have a lot of other films that I’m excited to do as well. And I love Gal Gadot so that makes it better too.”

As you read Jenkins clearly stated that she had her own doubts about a third film. However, that is not the important bit. Jenkins clearly states that she wrote the last scene of the film last week and she feels really good about it. Considering that she’d taken writing duties for the second film it makes sense that is doing the same for the threequel. However, I’m not sure whether from a storytelling perspective would that be a good decision as the screenplay of the sequel was messy.

I’m not aware whether Jenkins is the sole writer on the project or is there someone else involves as well but it does seem like the script for the threequel is complete. I don’t know which draft it is but considering principal photography and post production it looks like Wonder Woman 3 would have late 2024 release or early 2025. Another interesting, thing Jenkins shared is that Warner Bros. is asking her to find different ways to keep on making more, so it seems like the threequel may not be the last for the character.

Warner Bros. saying this makes sense as with all the changes they’re need of dependable characters for the DCEU. I don’t care how many movies they make, I just hope they make them good otherwise they’ll ruin another great character. Hoping that Wonder Woman 3 will be better than Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman 3 doesn’t have a release date of yet. Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
