Joker is one of the most critically acclaimed and honored superhero flick of all time. It went on to earn 11 Oscar nominations, with two victories including awards for Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir). The one of a kind superhero film barely had any super moments and was largely depressing and qualified as a social horror film. The film had no hope whatsoever for its protagonist Arthur Fleck who ultimately broke down to become the most iconic DC villain of all time. The good news is that it’s getting a sequel by the name of Joker: Folie à Deux, but is Joker 2 really a good news?
Joker: Folie à Deux Confirmed
A few hours ago, it was confirmed that a Joker sequel is officially in the works and director Todd Phillips also revealed the title for the sequel which will be called Joker: Folie à Deux. Phillips took to Instagram to announce the new film which is currently in its pre-production stage. Check out his post below.
Todd Phillips directed and co-wrote the first Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck aka Joker. If you slide over to the next image, you’ll find Joaquin Phoenix reading the script of the newly announced film. This confirms that he will be back as the titular character and continue Joker’s journey. It is pretty clear from he red script cover that Phillips is teaming up again with co-writer Scott Silver on the sequel.
Joker 2 Release Date, Plot and Cast
Plot details haven’t been revealed yet, however, Folie à Deux is a psychological disorder where the same or similar mental disorder affects two or more people. This could hint at the involvement of Harley Quinn, Punchline, Mister Hammer, or some or the other Joker sidekick. It could also mean the involvement of Batman as Joker shares a very intense and dark relationship with him that effects both of them.
As for the cast of Joker 2, Joaquin Phoenix will return as the Joker and Brett Cullen will also surely return as Thomas Wayne. Not many other characters survived the first film, but some new characters like the sidekicks mentioned above are expected, and so are some other DC villains. There is no hint whatsoever regarding Joker 2: Folie à Deux release date but considering that the pre-production has just started, we can’t expect it before late 2023.
Now whether or not this is a good news, depends on you. On one hand, it would showcase the upwards journey of the Joker after tremendous fall in Joker (2019), but on the other hand, there’s a huge risk that it might spoil or undo everything first one did. We’ll leave calling is a good or bad decision up to you.
