Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the third installment of the Ant-Man franchise. All the main characters are of course returning for the film along with series director Peyton Reed. The early reactions and reviews about the film have been making headlines as it is the second Rotten MCU film on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer. This was unexpected as the previous two Ant-Man films worked very well with the critics and fans. To be honest, the third film leaves behind the franchise’s personal and grounded narrative and goes for the classic MCU route where it is all about big CGI worlds and fights. Another element that the third film abandons which featured in the last two films and is a part why there were so fun is a character called Luis who is played by Michael Peña who is shown as Scott’s friend and partner in crime.
However, as the narrative of the third film got bigger this character was completely omitted by the filmmakers and no explanation was offered as to why this change was made because honestly whenever he was on screen I couldn’t stop laughing. Thankfully, a few days after its release, director Peyton Reed has offered an explanation as to why the character isn’t included in Quantumania.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: Why Luis Isn’t There?
Franchise director Peyton Reed recently revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Quantumania had no versions where Luis appears. From the inception of the threequel it was clear that due to the scale of the narrative it was impossible for the writers to fit in Luis into this chaotic world, so rather they let him go. Reed said, “There were no versions of this movie [with Luis]. There are a lot of characters in the movie. We obviously have our Lang, van Dyne and Pym family, but then we also introduced Kang, MODOK and all of our Freedom Fighter characters. So we had to make decisions early on about what stories we could tell and what stories we couldn’t tell.”
The director further added, “I love those characters. They were really, really fun and part of the Lang family, but as we got further and further into [development] and knew we wanted to bring the family into the Quantum Realm pretty early in the movie, it just didn’t make sense [to include Luis and co.].”
In a past interview, Michael Peña had clarified that he has no idea whether he will be appearing in the third film or not, “For the last one, I didn’t really know what capacity I was going to come back in or if I was going to come back. I think they’re a year away from filming, I think it would be great if I could do a third one. But you never know, especially with all the stuff that happened in Endgame. Right now, Marvel’s in a situation where they can crush some expectations, they’re gonna have to crush some expectations of other characters, not just mine, so hopefully I make the cut.”
In another interview with Comicbook’s Brandon Davis, Peña dodges the about his return to Quantumania. The conversation looked something like:
Davis: “All this hero and villain talk, I have to ask if you’re coming back for more hero work over there at Quantumania.”
Pena: “Who knows?”
Davis: “Can you say anything?”
Pena: “You can’t. Yeah, of course. I don’t even know why people ask.”
The core cast of the Ant-Man franchise including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas are returning. Along with these regulars, the supporting cast of the film has added Kathryn Newton, Jonathan Majors, Bill Murray and Michelle Pfeiffer.
