Deadpool 3 Is Marvel Studios' First R-Rated Movie, It's Official!

Deadpool was released in 2016 and despite it being R-Rated it was a box office juggernaut. With great critical reception and an amazing box office run it was natural that a sequel was happening. Deadpool 2 came out in 2018 and was a success again. It was not as good as the first film but it was not a disappointment. It was going great until Disney acquired Fox, which was great news as now the MCU would have all their heavy hitters. The problem was that this put the Deadpool franchise in danger of a reboot and an actor change. However, Marvel had clarified a long time ago that they won’t reboot the Deadpool movies and won’t replace as Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. This meant that Marvel would have to find a creative and seamless way to bring Deadpool 3 into the MCU.

While the updates regarding the film have been sparse we knew that the film is coming soon. After Marvel, skipped announcing absolutely anything about the film at D23 Expo and San Diego Comic Con, they’ve spilled out some information later on. A month ago, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman announced Deadpool 3 and Jackman’s return knocked the hats off fans’ heads. After this huge announcement, Deadpool 3 gets another update as it becomes the first Marvel and Disney movie which will be rated R and it looks like the most excited guy right now is the director himself- Shawn Levy.

Deadpool 3 Is R-Rated and That is Awesome!

Deadpool 3 - Hugh Jackman Reveals The Truth About His Wolverine Return!

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy was speaking with Collider where he revealed that the threequel which he is developing would be the first R-Rated movie of the MCU, he also gave us an update on the status of the movie. Levy revealed that he is currently working with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. He also revealed that the violence in the film would be off the charts. The filmmaker said,

“We are writing, rewriting, developing, prepping ‘Deadpool’ every day now. It is such a blast to laugh every day. It is so delicious to hear and write and come up with these scenes where people are just talking foul. And the violence is in your face and hardcore, and it’s very much a ‘Deadpool’ movie. And it has Logan in it. And it has Wolverine in it. It’s too fun.”

He further added, “I’m having so much fun, and I haven’t even hit the shooting floor yet. […] I have to say, developing a Deadpool movie is one of the most fun creative experiences of my life because it’s not just that it’s rated R. It’s that it’s so filled with self-awareness, and that makes in-writing very, very fun in a way that is unique to that franchise.”

Levy also talked about The Internship which was a film he directed that was originally R-Rated but he cut it to be a PG-13 movie. He called the film to be one of the few regrets of his directing career. The Adam Project director said, “One of the few regrets in my career is that I got strong-armed into recutting The Internship from an R to a PG-13. I still regret it because the R-rated version of Vince [Vaughn] and Owen [Wilson] in ‘The Internship’ was way better. And the me of today would not have succumbed like the me of 20, whatever, 12 years ago.”

Deadpool 3 is slated to release on 6th September 2024 in MCU’s Phase 6.
