Marvel China Ban Lifted

You might’ve seen a trend in the past year that no Marvel film or to be honest, any Disney film as such is going passed the $1 Billion mark. This is weird because earlier it was a rather often affair for a Marvel film to cross this threshold given the popularity and momentum that Marvel had gained. You might say that the pandemic is the cause of all problems and I would absolutely agree. However, 2022 didn’t have any major pandemic scares in most of the countries. Theatres were almost open the entire year and I would argue that all the films did good business and it was a good year for the global box office. Having said that it is weird that in a year where Top Gun: Maverick crossed $1 Billion, no MCU film was able to achieve this feat, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came the closest ($955 Million).

If you bring up the question of quality then I would agree with y’all wholesomely that they don’t deserve to cross this figure as each MCU film of 2022 was mediocre at best. However, that is not a proper reason as a film like Jurassic World: Dominion was able to do this. The reason for this is a major factor in the success of all MCU films has been the Chinese box office which is huge. The contribution from the Chinese box office has always been tremendous and sometimes almost determining factor in the success of the film. A film like Venom which would’ve been a box office bomb it was not released in China. However, as Avatar: The Way of Water had crept its way into China it seems like it has also dragged some of the other Disney films with it as well.

Why Are Disney Films No Longer Banned In China?

This is an extremely positive news for all Disney films as their biggest international market has opened up once again. The reason for the sudden change of heart from China can be explained very easily. Disney just replaced Bob Chapek as their CEO and reappointed Bob Iger. This move has certainly worked in their favor as Iger’s appointment itself has installed confidence in China where they’re ready to release MCU films in China once again. Iger must have really good relationships with the Chinese authorities.

This would be mean that after almost three years, a MCU film will be releasing in China. This hiatus started with Black Widow. It was either due to China restricting all international releases to prioritize its own domestic film industry or comments made by the franchise’s stars or directors, like Chloé Zhao. If a Weibo account run by Marvel Studios is to be trusted then Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would be released in China on 7th and 17th February 2023 respectively.

Given Wakanda Forever’s $837 Million worldwide collection, this boost from the China release may help it go beyond $1 Billion. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will also massively benefit from this as it would be the first MCU film to have a proper run on the Chinese box office in over three years. However, as the films are being released in a gap of only 10 days I think one of the films will suffer given which film the Chinese Marvel fans are more excited about. It is fixed that both films will eat some million dollars off each other.
