Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Review A Merry Time

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is the third and last film in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The third film in the franchise has been something fans have been waiting for many years. It was rumored for a longtime that at San Diego Comic Con we’ll be getting a small tease of the film. We did but it was only for the people in attendance. Fans including me were disappointed as we wanted to see more from the best team in the MCU now that there are no Avengers and director James Gunn understands this. That is why before we see the final film in the Guardians franchise, he has prepared us a delicious Christmas special. An hour long fun time with our favorite characters.

This year we got Marvel’s first special, while Werewolf by Night introduced many new concepts and characters, GOTG special won’t do that. It is basically a family Christmas movie with our favorite Guardians. We knew this was coming but we didn’t have any other update regarding this till Marvel finally released a full length trailer it. As time passes very quickly we’re already to the moment where the holiday special is already out on Disney+. Let’s see did James Gunn bring the Christmas Magic into this special.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Review: Best Thing Marvel has done All Year Long?

This the second special Marvel has come up with this year, first was a Halloween special which focused on Werewolf and it was one of the best things Marvel had done this year. Everything that Marvel has come up with this year has kind of sucked. Even Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was not a good film but only an average venture. Werewolf by Night was a genuinely fun and different experience one would expect from Marvel. I only wish it was longer though, like feature length.

The Guardians of the Galaxy special is another wonder from Marvel that just like Werewolf by Night is an extremely fun time and James Gunn is able to induce the Guardians of the Galaxy charm and Christmas spirit into this special. The premise of the special is simple. Peter is sad and it is Christmas time so Mantis and Drax abduct Kevin Bacon from Earth as a present to Peter. While the special can feel silly or even ridiculous at times, it is saved by the amount of character development that Gunn has inculcated perfectly.

All the Guardians look quite different from the last time we saw them in Thor: Love and Thunder. For instance, Groot has grown up quite a bit and he has bulked up. The man is like a massive bodybuilder. Rocket is working with Cosmo the dog, Nebula is still with the Guardians and Drax and Mantis’ relationship seems to be moving forward. Kevin Bacon is well Kevin Bacon in the special…literally. Overall the special is extremely fun time with good gags, nice acting, good writing and excellent callbacks like all the gifts.

Rocket finally getting Bucky’s arm, Groot getting his Gameboy once again, etc. I also like how they’ve used this special as a way to build a relationship between Peter and Mantis as she finally tells him that they are siblings (step). I also like how they redeem Yondu once again. They show him an extremely negative light at the start but then they reveal us the entire story at the end of the special. Because of these beautiful moments and scenes, the special becomes more than just another funny thing out on the internet.

I will give Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special a 4 out of 5 Stars. Also, hang around as there is a post credit scene which is absolutely hilarious. The two important additions to the cast of the third film is Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will release net year on 5th May 2023. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be available for streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar from 25th November 2022.
