Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Was Torturous For James Gunn!

The third and last GOTG film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has been something fans have been waiting for many years. It was rumored for a longtime that at San Diego Comic Con we’ll be getting a small tease of the film and we did but it was only for the people in attendance. Fans including me were disappointed as we wanted to see more from the most loveable team in the MCU, now that there are no Avengers, and director James Gunn understands this. That is why, before we see the final film in the Guardians franchise, he has prepared us a delicious Christmas special. It is basically an hour long fun time with our favorite characters. This year we got Marvel’s first special in the form of Halloween Special – Marvel’s Werewolf by Night. While it introduced many new concepts and characters, the GOTG Christmas special won’t do that.

It is basically a family Christmas movie with our favorite Guardians. We knew this was coming but we didn’t have any other update regarding this till Marvel finally released a full length trailer it. The special is about to release in the next few days but the main event is about what will come next year. Vol. 3 is extremely hyped and for good reasons. However, James Gunn recent comments suggests that the production of Vol. 3 was torturous for him. Let’s find out why?

Why was Guardians of the Galaxy Torturous for James Gunn?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 SDCC 2022 Trailer Full Details and Descriptions!

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn spoke about bidding farewell to Marvel with his last film in the Guardians franchise and one would expect kind words for a man doing his last film but Gunn was quick to admit that the production of the film was torturous. The DCU Head said, “… I’ll be honest, I wrote the screenplay in a few hours, so it just kind of spilled out of me. It was very easy. Everything about shooting it was easy. Everything about getting the performances out of people was easy, whereas Vol. 3 was torture in every way. And so it was kinda like going back and forth between these two things. So it was really fun and really easy, and the score was instant.”

The filmmaker continued to talk about the Post Production process, “Great. It’s great. It’s a big movie, and it’s so different from the special because the special is so wacky and insane. The movie is so emotional, but it’s been a real joy making it. So it’s coming along great. I still have a ton of visual effect shots I’m working on, and of course, putting the score together with John Murphy, which is gigantic. So those are the things I’ve been focusing on most, lately.”

In a separate interview with Phase Zero podcast, James Gunn once again confirmed that the Holiday Special is “very, very different,” and Vol. 3 is “very, very, emotional:”

“[The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special] is also very, very different than Vol. 3. Because Vol. 3 is a very, very emotional movie. And it tells this story about Rocket, and where he came from, and where he’s going, and how that ties into everybody else, and the end of this iteration of the Guardians. And so doing this goofy thing like once every four days and going, and shooting four days of Guardians Vol. 3, and then going back. It almost created a lot of whiplash. But it was also almost like the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special days were like snow days. That was recess. That was fun.”

The two important additions to the cast of the third film is Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will release net year on 5th May 2023. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will be available for streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar from 25th November 2022.
