For someone who is not a big fan of action movies, it is a glaring contradiction to say that I love the John Wick franchise. Well, it is okay. We all have complexities and layers. Honestly, I happened to like only the third film from the franchise. The first film is good but it is not that action heavy and I didn’t feel the action. Like my favorite action films are the one where I feel the action in my gut. For example – Oldboy and Nobody. That kind of feeling and thrill was only provided by chapter three and I absolutely loved it. In my opinion, the fourth chapter is the weakest installment of the franchise. Keanu Reeves is awesome in all of them though. The main reason for the franchise’s insane success is the definite vision behind it. Chad Stahelski is a formidable force behind the camera. Given this success of the director, he was asked what he plans to do in his future apart from expanding the John Wick universe. Stahelski was asked whether he’d like to direct a Marvel film and his response was quite interesting.
John Wick Director Stahelski Unsure About Directing A Marvel Film!
Speaking with The Direct, John Wick 4 director Chad Stahelski shared his thoughts on potentially taking the directing chair for an MCU project. The conversation looked something like,
Klein Felt: “And you’ve played well, or potentially played in the world of IP before, right? You pitched ‘Blade’ to Marvel Studios?”
Chad Stahelski: “I was one of many that brought in takes of it, sure. That’s the one property I always thought was fascinating. I’m always fascinated by vampire and martial arts. So it seemed like a good mix.”
Stahelski further revealed that in the superhero realm he wanted to direct Blade the most. The conversation continued with,
Felt: “I was gonna ask, is there anything else from that super-powered world that you would be interested in doing?”
Stahelski: “Honestly, Blade was probably my favorite kick out of that. But like, look, I’m a big fan of that genre. I love Batman. I love the Marvel world. I love the first ‘Iron Man’ to death. I love James Gunn’s first ‘Guardians’ to death. These are all milestones, I think, in cinema. I just also think that there are people that get that IP better than me. I know my sweet spot. I do better when there are no limits. I do better when I can kind of bend the rules. I like to be a little bit more subversive. So it’s kind of weird.”
Stahelski finally revealed why he is hesitant about directing a Marvel film at this stage of his career. Stahelski concluded with, “Maybe, even up to four or five years ago, I would have pretty much taken that shot, I think. Now, I’ve kind of hopefully evolved as a filmmaker. I don’t know. I feel comfortable in creating things. I feel comfortable working with other people to try and build something. Look, what I’m saying is there’s great IP out there there are people already doing it. You know? I’m gonna swing for the cheap seats over here. I’m gonna go big and try to make our own stuff. Someone’s got to keep trying to get some new IP in the game. I think I’m gonna go try that for a little while.”
The Franchise stars Keanu Reeves in the lead role. The other cast includes Clancy Brown, Donnie Yen, Bill Skasrsgard, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, Rina Sawayama, Ian Mcshane, Lance Reddick and Laurence Fishburne. John Wick: Chapter 4 is slated to release to on 24th March 2023.
