Avengers: Endgame gave a satisfying end to all the OG Avengers except for Thor and Hawkeye. While Hawkeye got his own series, Thor on the other hand continues his story in Thor: Love and Thunder. This film made Thor the first Marvel superhero to get his 4th solo movie. After Thor: Ragnarok’s success and critical acclaim, everyone was expecting its sequel to be amazing as it was directed by the same guy – Taika Waititi. However, the film got mixed reviews since its premiere and as the days have gone by and the film has opened to audiences those opinions have drastically changed as the film is now being considered one of the worst films in the entire MCU. The film suffered from the over ambitious attitude of the filmmaker as there was a specific tone of the film and it resisted to grow pass it.
The film almost felt like a parody of itself as in order to create a lighthearted rom-com, Waititi made the entire film almost atrocious with this wacky ideas which mostly works in his films but this was not one of those times. Despite having an incredible cast the film failed to impress many and it didn’t recreate Ragnarok magic. However, the end of the film suggested that Thor will continue his adventures and he might appear in the MCU once again. Waititi and Hemsworth’s statements as well didn’t suggest a definite end for the character. However, today we have major update on Thor’s fate in the MCU.
Chris Hemsworth Reveals Thor ‘s MCU Future!
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Chris Hemsworth was asked about his MCU future and the actor very kindly gave an answer which was very true. The actor said, “Yeah, for sure. I feel like we’d probably have to close the book if I ever did it again, you know what I mean? I feel like it probably warrants that. I feel like it’d probably be the finale, but that’s not based on anything anyone’s told me or any sort of plans. You have this birth of a hero, the journey of a hero, then the death of a hero, and I don’t know—am I at that stage? Who knows?”
In response to if there is more Thor in his future, the star admitted that, “I don’t know. I think there’d be more to say if the people want to hear me say it.”
When the interviewer then pointed out that the end of Love and Thunder promises more, the actor countered by, “Yeah, I think they always do. Look, I’m completely open to it, if there is something unique and fresh and unexpected to do with the character and the world. I’ve always loved the experience. I’ve been very thankful I’ve been able to do something different each time.”
In a separate interview with GMA, Hemsworth claimed that he’s done with playing Thor. He said, “Uh, I don’t know. I’m sort of… finished my run for the time being but never say never. I love playing the character. My daughter, the other day, was saying, ‘No, no, Dad, you’ve gotta do it. People love seeing you play Thor.’ And so, who knows?”
During a moment in Marvel Studios Assembled, the actor had admitted that Love and Thunder might very well be the last time he’ll play his MCU hero. He said, “I have loved every single time I’ve played the character. This is ten years for most of us now, and maybe the last time I play the character. I certainly was aware of that while shooting.”
Further ahead in the same interview, Hemsworth admitted that even if he is to return as Thor, he didn’t want to get as big as he had gotten for Love and Thunder as it is extremely difficult. The actor said, “Each time I’ve played the character and put the muscle on and put the size on, and then lost it for something else and played another character, there’s muscle memory, and I used to say it sort of got easier each time. This was particularly hard. I think because the target weight we aimed for was quite a ways above where I’d been before. We had 12 months when I was at home, just training and sort of, you know, puppeteering the body and manipulating and trying to like, ’Okay, we could try more swimming now or try more martial arts. It was a really fun exploration, but I don’t know that I wanna get that big again. But I was sort of… It was… Yeah, it was just exhausting. I don’t know, maybe I’m getting old, but things just started to hurt more.”
The film marks the return of regular players in a Thor film and some new entries – Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Russell Crowe, Taika Waititi, , Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, and Vin Diesel and Christian Bale. The film is directed by Thor: Ragnarok fame Taika Waititi. He also co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
Thor: Love and Thunder is available for streaming on Disney+ and as physical media it will be available for purchase from 27th September 2022.
