The Marvels is the sequel to the 2019 MCU blockbuster Captain Marvel. I don’t need to inform anyone how bad the last two years have been for superhero movies, especially for Marvel Studios. Once at the top of the food chain, now Marvel is struggling to churn out a decent product, be it movies or TV shows. If you haven’t noticed there is literally no hype for the sequel. A momentary buzz happens whenever the studio releases some new promotional footage but other then that no one is talking about The Marvels. Thanks to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel can’t properly promote the film so there goes another chance at marketing. The film is burdened by a budget of $274 million ($55 million subsidy from United Kingdom) and to make matters worse, the opening box office numbers of the sequel are terrible as well.

The Marvels Box Office Projections Are Lower Than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania!

In a new report from Box Office Pros, The Marvels is projected to earn around $50 million to $75 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. The total domestic box office run of The Marvels is also estimated to be just between $121 million and $189 million. If compared to its predecessor then this is quite a drop as Captain Marvel projected to around $100 to $120 million domestically in its opening weekend back in 2019. The film famously out did these numbers and had a $150 million opening weekend.

This $50-$75 million figure is roughly half of what was estimated for Warner Bros. The Flash, which after middling box office projections would go on to become one of the biggest financial failures in studio history. Further adding to the movie’s predicted woes, presales are down 69% behind the pace of those sold for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and 72% behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It doesn’t help that to achieve profitability the film needs to climb a mountain because of its astronomical budget.

There is a serious threat that The Marvels might become the lowest opener from the MCU beating 2009’s The Incredible Hulk – $55 million. For context here are some recent MCU opening weekends to compare to these projections:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: $118.4 million
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania: $104 million
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: $181 million
Thor: Love and Thunder: $144 million
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: $187 million

The Marvels is slated to release in theatres near you on 10th November 2023.
