Sony might be the smartest production company out there as they’re using their greatest asset to full effect. They created an alternate universe of their own where they introduced Spider-Man related famous characters and make spin-off movies of them as they exist in one universe. Venom, Venom: Let there be Carnage, and Morbius were part of that universe and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie starring Aaron Taylor Joy would be a part of this as well. Another film which is a part of this universe is Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson in the titular role. The film was recently in production and we got a look at all the people in their new avatars for the film. We still don’t who is playing what in the film because we don’t which iteration of Madame Web is Sony adapting. That being said, Emma Roberts who happened to be the newest recruit of the film has finally revealed some details of the character she plays in the film.
Madame Web: Emma Roberts Not Playing A Superhero?
Talking to Shut Up Evan podcast, Emma Roberts talked about her role in the new the SSMU film. The actress revealed a great ton of information about Madame Web but kept the details cryptic. She didn’t reveal her character’s name or anything else simply addressed the spirit of the film. Roberts said, “What I can tell you is I’m not a superhero. Some people may think she’s a superhero but not… like I don’t have supernatural powers. So I can tell you that.”
She further added, “It’s really different from any of the other Marvel movies, it’s super grounded. I love that it has so many great actresses, it’s really female-driven, and I just think it’s not going to be what people expect.” She concluded with, “So I’m really, really excited for everybody to see it, and by the way, I’m excited to see it, because I only worked like a week on it, so there’s so much that I haven’t seen. I did get to see the storyboards and read the script, and it’s fantastic.”
Despite her claims of only working for a week on the film, Roberts did confirm that she’d returned to L.A. for shooting a few more scenes for the SSMU film. The Cosmic Circus had recently reported that Emma Roberts plays Mary, Peter’s mother in the film and would be pregnant with him in the film. Madame Web was created by late writer Dennis O’Neil. The original Madame Web — real name Cassandra Webb — first appeared in 1980’s Amazing Spider-Man #210. The mantle of Madame Web was later taken up by Julia Carpenter, who is perhaps best known for being the second Spider-Woman. Created by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, Julia first appeared as Spider-Woman as part of the Secret Wars limited series in 1984. Julia became Madame Web in 2010’s Amazing Spider-Man #637 following the death of Cassandra Webb.
The film stars Dakota Johnson, as well as fellow co-stars Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts and most recently Severance’s star Adam Scott. The film is to be directed by S.J. Clarkson and the screenplay of the film is written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, with a previous draft having been penned by Kerem Sanga.
Madame Web is slated to release on 16th February 2024.
