Ahsoka Finale and Future Mortis Gods and Dathomir Explained

While it is no Andor, Ahsoka has managed to rise above the Star Wars mediocrity by delivering some exceptional moments and building towards a greater narrative. Episode 8 ended things in an Empire Strikes Back kind of way as our heroes failed to stop Thrawn from returning to the Galaxy. While we all anticipated this, it was quite epic to see that unfold on screen. Episode 8 was jam-packed with action and further tapped into the mystical side of Star Wars by bringing in Undead Troopers, Blade of Talzin, and a lot of Force. Talking further about the mystical side, this article might answer most of your questions regarding Mortis Gods and Dathomir storyline teased at the very end of the show.

Ahsoka – Baylan Skoll’s Ending With Mortis Gods Explained

Baylan Skoll turned out to be one of the most intriguing, complex, and root-worthy characters in Ahsoka. Although, he wasn’t that interesting in the first 3 episodes, he quickly became one of the pulling forces of the season. After Thrawn’s introduction, it was revealed that Baylan was looking for a higher purpose than the Empire and the Jedi but we never learn what exactly he was looking for. After his duel with Ahsoka in Episode 7, we see him directly at the end of the series finale where he is seen standing on a statue of one of the Mortis Gods. This ending left fans stunned as this means we’ll explore the mystical and mythological side of Star Wars even more deeply.

Baylan’s motive was to discover the truth behind the stories he heard at the Jedi Temple as a child. Through his years of experience, he learned that the struggle for power in the galaxy is endless and he needs to break this never ending wheel. It seems like in the finale he has found the ancient power needed to end this. The Mortis Gods are tied to the Force itself, and that is probably why Baylan hears them calling to him. It is possible that Baylan finds the realm of Mortis itself and act as the new keeper of the balance. If you are unaware, Mortis Gods include the Father (the statue he is seen standing on), the son (shown beside), and the Daughter (destroyed).

In the Star Wars lore, the Daughter represented the light side of the Force, the Son represented the dark side, and the Father acted as the balance between the two, ensuring that neither overcame the other. At one point, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka visit Mortis, where the Father called for Anakin to act as the keeper of balance, while the Son wanted him to join the dark side. The Son proceeded to kills the Daughter with the dagger of Mortis and then ruled it for a bit before The Father sacrificed himself in order to take away the Son’s power. This brought an end to the Mortis Gods long before Ahsoka takes place, hence, it makes sense that they might be calling for Baylan to serve as the new keeper of balance.

Why Is Thrawn Heading to Dathomir?

Grand Admiral Thrawn will now serve as the primary antagonist for rest of the Mando-verse. He already proved himself worthy of being called Grand Admiral as he managed to escape and trap Ahsoka and Sabine, using his wits and experience. At the end, his ship was seen heading towards Dathomir, nicknamed the “rancor planet” which is bathed in blood-red light by its sun Domir. This is a planet where the dark side of the force is especially strong and it was once ruled by the Nightsisters. Some fans are speculating that Thrawn arriving on Dathomir is the symbol of the First Order. Well, here’s what Dathomir is all about as well as what Thrawn might intend to do there.

As explained above, Dathomir was the domain on the Nightsisters and the birthplace of Sith like Darth Maul. During the Clone Wars, it came to the attention of Count Dooku, resulting in the slaughter of the Nightsisters. At the end of Clone Wars, Merrin, Shelish, Jerserra, Morgan Elsbeth, Yenna, and the three Great Mothers were the only known survivors. At the end of Ahsoka, Morgan sacrificed herself to let Thrawn reach Dathomir as it would be mutually beneficial for the Nightsisters as well as Thrawn. With the help of Thrawn, Nightsisters can re-establish their dominion, and with the help of Nightsisters, Thrawn can raise an army of Sith and Undead Troopers to help conquer the galaxy once again. Therefore, fans’ beliefs regarding all this linking to First Order are definitely not far fetched.
